Ask any television fan and they’ll tell you that one of the biggest mysteries to the noughties was trying to figure out who the mum of Ted’s kids was on popular sitcom, How I Met Your Mother.

Finally, after nine seasons, we got our answer (Tracy McConnell, for anyone wondering). But now, that curious narrative and constant second guessing is set to plague us—in a good way—once again with the release of the show’s spin-off, How I Met Your Father

Starring Hilary Duff as the lead characterSophie, the pilot episode reveals the New Yorker and her friends on a wild night out in the city. The narrator is an older version of Sophie (played by Kim Cattrall) who tells her children that on this fateful night, she met their father.

Yes, the show really delved right in there by potentially already revealing who the dad to Sophie’s children would be—only four male characters who stood out. Already, fans have an idea of which of them it is.

Who is the father in How I Met Your Father

From the pilot episode of the new series, four possible contenders have arisen, with signs pointing to Jesse (played by Chris Lowell) as the crowd favourite.

However, the musician and Uber driver’s story is far from simple. A video of his rejected proposal to his former partner went viral on the internet, leaving him with a negative outlook on love and romance.

Sophie, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. She’s a shameless hopeless romantic which quickly clashes with Jesse’s hardened perspective on the matter.

Per BustleLowell provided some extra insights into how Sophie and Jesse’s dynamic plays out: “She just refuses to be let down. She refuses to not see the silver lining. To still have that kind of optimism about her future, about love, is something that rubs off on him in all the best ways.”

Of course, we should to take this initial hint with a large grain of salt—it is television after all—because there’s three other guys that come into Sophie’s story on that fateful evening.

For now, the other potential dads are: Charlie (played by Tom Ainsley), an English lad who recently moved to the Big Apple, Sid (played by Suraj Sharma), a bar owner who recently got engaged, and there’s Ian, (played by Daniel Augustin), with whom Sophie went on a Tinder date with only to discover that he was moving to Australia the following day.

Who knows, perhaps Ian will come back from Australia—he and Sophie really hit it off, after all. Or maybe Sid will break up with his fiancee and find love with Sophie. Or maybe, just maybe it will be none of them and we’ll have to wait until later on in the series for another flashback to the night which could reveal an entirely different character.

Whatever way you look at it, it seems the only way we’ll ever find out is by continuing to watch the show—if you’re in Australia, Disney+ has confirmed the series will be coming soon.
