My word is final when I say there was no more iconic Australian couple than Kylie Minogue and Michael Hutchence. Their romance defined pop culture at the turn of the decade and quickly became one of the most mythologised love stories in recent history.
Dating from 1989 to 1991, it was a period that marked a dramatic shift for both stars — Kylie transitioning from soap-and-pop sweetheart into a global pop figure, and Hutchence leading the wave that was INXS’ international success.
The pair’s popularity combined with their public personas – Kylie seen as the darling of pop in contrast to Hutchence’s sensual, rock-god image – made for an irresistible mix that sent fans into an insatiable hysteria.
How Did Kylie Minogue & Michael Hutchence Start Dating?
Before meeting Michael, Kylie was one half of another iconically Australian coupling: with her Neighbours’ co-star, Jason Donovan.Their relationship had been playing out both on and off screen as Scott and Charlene, before coming to an end around 1989 as their careers began moving in different directions.
Not long after that breakup, Kylie met Michael Hutchence. And the shift was immediate. If Jason was her first love story in the public eye, Michael was something entirely different — the INXS frontman already a full-fledged global rock star, operating in a far more intense, grown-up world of fame.
Jason Donovan would later sum up the fallout bluntly, calling it “a pretty big punch to take,” and describing it as “an extremely painful parting of the ways.”
But according to Jason himself, the first spark had actually been building before that. In his autobiography Between The Lines, he recalls taking Kylie to see INXS during their Kick world tour in 1988, writing: “We got the best seats in the house and backstage passes as well, and when the show came to an end, we were asked whether we wanted to come and meet the band.”
It was backstage that Kylie, then 21, met 29-year-old Michael Hutchence — and Jason says the chemistry was instant. “I wasn’t the only one to notice the buzz between Kylie and Michael that night,” he wrote. “I’d noticed him staring at her when we met backstage. He kept whispering in her hair and she kept laughing.”
Kylie, on the other hand, has always described the relationship as a formative one.
Looking back on her time with Michael Hutchence, she has described it in deeply reflective terms, telling Us Weekly, “It had a profound effect on me,” and adding that “he taught me to be still… be true to myself.”
Why Did Kylie Minogue & Michael Hutchence Break Up?
After two years together, in 1991, Kylie and Michael split. In the 2019 Mystify: Michael Hutchence documentary Kylie called their relationship “doomed”.
“Was it work, was it the drugs? I don’t know. He was like a broken man,” she said.
In a separate interview the popstar also attributed their conflicting schedules to their breakup.
“Michael was touring all over the world so it became really hard to see each other,” Kylie said, adding, “I would send video messages to him, but it became more and more difficult.”
She also described it as a devastating split.
“He was the first in so many ways. And of those firsts was heartbreak. I was devastated.”
