Mere hours after news broke that Off Campus star Mika Abdalla and actor Jake Short had ended their engagement, fans began revisiting an old podcast clip that has since attracted renewed scrutiny online.
The former couple confirmed their split through a representative, who told Us Weekly: “Due to recent interest in Mika’s personal life it would feel remiss to not address that her and Jake are no longer together.”
The statement added that the pair “continue to support each other and remain on friendly terms, and kindly ask for privacy and respect.”
The breakup arrives at a particularly high-profile moment for Abdalla. Earlier this week, it was announced that her Off Campus character, Allie Hayes, would take centre stage in the series’ sophomore season opposite Dean Di Laurentis, played by Stephen Kalyn.
Abdalla has also recently appeared alongside Kalyn in a Quinn audio story inspired by the hockey romance phenomenon’s growing popularity.
In the wake of the announcement, viewers began circulating a clip from a 2024 episode of The Sit and Chat podcast, hosted by Short and fellow Disney Channel alum Bradley Steven Perry.
During the episode, titled Couples Therapy, Perry asked Short how he would describe Abdalla.
“I have two words,” Short replied with a smile. “I’d be like, ‘Some b—.'”
The comment appeared to catch both Perry and his now-wife, Natasha Bure Perry, off guard, with Perry responding awkwardly: “Oh my god.”
Abdalla quickly challenged the remark, pointing to Bure Perry and telling Short: “So, she’s the best person [Perry] knows, the best person he’s ever met, and I’m some b—?”
Short later attempted to diffuse the moment, joking that the pair were “locked in over here” as the conversation moved on.
Fans have also pointed to another exchange from the same episode, in which Abdalla said she was cold and asked to borrow Short’s shirt. He declined, prompting Bure Perry to interject, “Jake, give her the shirt,” before Short instead suggested lowering the AC.
Online, the consensus is hard to miss. While the breakup made headlines, many fans are more preoccupied with the resurfaced clip—and the feeling that Abdalla deserves better.
“The way Nat and Bradley [were] just in absolute shock when those two words came out of his mouth,” one Instagram user wrote.
Another fan posted on X: “Referring to your long-term partner as ‘some b—’ is so nasty, I don’t even care if it was a joke.”
On TikTok, reactions were similarly critical, with one user writing, “She deserves better,” while another commented, “She’s too baddie and tea for him.”
Abdalla and Short first met while filming Hulu’s 2022 comedy Sex Appeal and soon began dating. The couple announced their engagement three years later, with Short’s manager Brian Medavoy celebrating the milestone on Instagram at the time.
“From set to real life, watching your journey has been a joy,” he wrote. “Here’s to forever.”
Neither Abdalla nor Short has publicly addressed the resurfaced podcast clip. However, as is often the case with celebrity breakups, fans have returned to past interviews and public appearances in search of signs that may have previously gone unnoticed.
