If you cast your minds back to Christmas Eve 2018, you’ll remember that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth tied the knot in an intimate, low-key ceremony in what seemed like a real-life fairytale. While the world swooned over the union of their favourite former Disney Channel darling and Australian heartthrob, after almost eight month marriage and an on-again, off-again decade-long romance, the couple have decided to call it quits. So, in memory of the epic romance of Miley and Liam that once was, we take a look back and revisit all of their highs and lows, makeups and breakups and everything in between.
Cyrus’ and Hemsworth’s romance began on the set of film adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel The Last Song where they were cast opposite each other as love interests. In a 2009 interview with Seventeen, Cyrus revealed that she was initially turned off by Hemsworth’s attitude whereby it wasn’t until pair worked together that she began to fall for him. And as they say, the rest was history.
“I heard a rumor that he didn’t really want the role,” Cyrus said. “And when he came in to audition for the role, I’m thinking, ‘Here’s this guy, he’s amazingly good-looking, super confident and he doesn’t realize how blessed he is to be in this room, because I know how blessed I am. This is such a big opportunity for both of us. And I was thinking, ‘Ugh, gross.’ You know?”
The couple make their red-carpet debut at the premiere of their new film looking very much loved-up and in love.
The release of Can’t Be Tamed marked the beginning of Cyrus’ transition away from her Hannah Montana persona. She also revealed that a lot of the songs featured on the record were inspired by her new lover. “There are a lot of songs that are about Liam,” she told MTV News in June 2010. “All of them are about him in a way, but it’s also about past relationships that you gotta get over and move on and just about freeing yourself from anything that you feel holds you back.”
Things weren’t looking good for Cyrus and Hemsworth in 2010 with E! Reporting that the pair had split due to scheduling arrangements. “Ever since she left for Detroit, Miley has been super focused on her work,” a source revealed to E! News. “Liam wanted more, but she’s 17 and has other priorities right now. He’s been a distraction.” All breakup rumours were quashed in September later that year when Cyrus and Hemsworth were spotted together running errands.
Stepping out to attend the premiere of The Hunger Games, the couple left social media in a frenzy after Cyrus was spotted with what appeared to be an engagement ring on her wedding finger. The singer later took to Twitter to deny the fervent speculation, writing: “I’m not engaged. I’ve worn this same ring on this finger since November! People just wanna find something to talk about! It’s a topaz people!”.
Just a few mere months after denying rumours of an engagement, the couple officially announced their engagement in an interview with People in 2012.
Explosive new reports emerged that Cyrus cheated on Hemsworth with Gossip Girl actor Ed Westwick. Cyrus fired back at celebrity blogger Perez Hilton denying the claims, tweeting: “@perezhilton hope you find love one day but can you not fuck with mine. I’ve never been with Ed W in my life. I was at the studio last night.”
A month after that controversial performance with Robin Thicke, Cyrus unfollowed Hemsworth on Twitter pretty much confirming that their romance was over. After news of their separation broke, Hemsworth was spotted kissing Mexican actress Eiza Gonzalez.
Cyrus had a brief relationship with Patrick Schwarzenegger from November 2014 to April 2015.
A potential reconciliation seemed to be imminent as Cyrus helped her ex-fiancée adopt a dog named Dora the Explorer.
Cyrus was spotted with Hemsworth’s family and friends whilst Down Under which implied that the pair had reconciled and gotten back together. It was then confirmed by People that the couple were re-engaged. “Miley is beyond happy to be engaged to Liam again,” a source said. “It might seem sudden, but they have been very close for the past few months.”
Despite years of being engaged, Cyrus told The Sun that marriage wasn’t on the cards for her and Hemsworth in the near future. “I don’t envision marriage. I’m 24. I hope I get to live a little bit more,” she said. “I have too much living to do [before I get married]. Three years ago, if you’d asked me if I’d be here, this happy with this man, I’d have been stunned. I’m just riding this out. In some relationships, you lose yourself by being with someone else. Actually, it made me find myself more. I have no idea what the next three years will bring, but if it’s possible to get even happier, I’ll take it.”
Cyrus and Hemsworth said “I do” in a surprise ceremony in Tennessee on Christmas Eve with only their closest family members in attendance.
Over the weekend, a representative for the 26-year-old confirmed to PEOPLE that couple have decided to go their separate ways. “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers,” the statement reads. “They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”
