It seems Odessa A’zion is nothing if not self-aware. The Marty Supreme breakout has confirmed she’s stepping away from Sean Durkin’s upcoming A24 film Deep Cuts, just days after her casting sparked online backlash.
The actress shared the news directly with fans via Instagram Stories on Wednesday night, announcing she would no longer be part of the project only two days after her role was revealed.
The film is based on Holly Brickley’s bestselling 2025 novel, set in the early 2000s and centred on the romantic relationship between college friends Percy and Joe.
The story unfolds against a music-driven backdrop, tracing ambition, intimacy and creative obsession.
Fans of the novel voiced concern earlier this week after it was revealed that A’zion would portray supporting character Zoe Gutierrez — a role described in the book as belonging to a woman of Mexican and Jewish heritage.
Taking to Instagram Stories on Wednesday night, just two days after the casting announcement, the 25-year-old actress confirmed she would no longer appear in the project.
“Guys!! I am with all of you and I am NOT doing this movie. F*ck that. I’m OUT. Lemme make myself clear,” she wrote.
A’zion admitted she had not read the novel prior to accepting the role and said she should have “paid more attention” to Zoe’s background.
“Thank you guys for bringing this to my attention, I agree with every single one of you,” she continued.
“I’m so sorry that this happened. It is so important for me to let you in on how it all went down: I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting.”
“Now that I know what I know??? F*ck that. I’m out,” she added.
“I’d never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it. that should do it. That’s not me.”
Although A’zion’s mother is Jewish, critics online argued the part should be played by a Latin American actress. In her statement, the actress said she agreed with fans’ concerns.
“There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role, and I am not one of them,” she wrote. “I can’t wait to see who it ends up being. I was so excited I just said hell yeah cause i knew how much i loved the story so I was just down to be apart of it, and so excited to work with this group of people! But f*ck that y’all never again!
The music-fuelled romantic drama was initially set to star Austin Butler and Saoirse Ronan, who later exited the project due to scheduling conflicts.
A’zion is best known for her breakout role opposite Timothée Chalamet in the Oscar-nominated Marty Supreme, as well as her appearance in HBO series I Love LA.
She has been frequently linked to actor Drew Starkey, with fans speculating the two are dating. Interestingly, Starkey has also been cast in Deep Cuts, meaning the two would have appeared together in the film prior to her exit.
Deep Cuts is produced by Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie, with Durkin also producing alongside Anthony Katagas, Jordan Tappis and A24. Brickley serves as an executive producer.
