Prince Phillip has been admitted to hospital and is currently being treated for an infection.

According to a Buckingham Palace spokesperson, The Duke of Edinburgh becoming unwell at Windsor and was admitted to the King Edward VII hospital in London after he appeared at Royal Ascot.

The 96-year-old did not arrive to the hospital by ambulance, but travelled by car alongside his personal protection officer during the evening.

โ€œThe Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII hospital in London last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition,โ€ said The Buckingham Palace spokesperson.

โ€œPrince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the state opening of parliament and Royal Ascot.โ€

As a result, his wife, The Queen attended the state opening of parliament with her son the Prince of Wales. The royal spokesperson insists The Queen is โ€œfully informedโ€ and will continue her plans to attend Royal Ascot following her delivery of the Queenโ€™s speech at the Houses of Parliament.

In the past, Prince Philip has been admitted to hospital for a bladder infection, and for abdominal investigations.
