Since it’s release in October, The Queen’s Gambit has been all anyone can talk about.

It has also broken records as Netflix’s biggest scripted limited series in history, reaching more than 62 million households in its first 28 days of release.
And it looks like the star of the hit-show—and its director—have no intention of slowing down. The Queen’s Gambit director, Scott Frank, and Anya Taylor-Joy are resetting the board for a much darker game: an adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s 1932 novel Laughter In the Dark.
During an interview on The Ringer’s The Watch podcast, Scott revealed his and Taylor-Joy’s plans for the film which will take on a darker and much more sinister tone than his previous work on Netflix.

What Is The Plot Of Laughter After Dark?
Based off the 1932 novel by the Russian author, Laughter In the Dark follows Albert Albinus, a middle-aged art critic from Berlin, who grows obsessed with a 17-year-old aspiring actress named Margot Peters. All for the sake of a youthful mistress, he forces his wife to leave him and move out of their shared house.
Recognising her power over Albert, Margot then convinces her past lover Axel Rex to help her, in an elaborate psychological scheme, to drain Albert of all his money.
During his podcast appearance, Frank described his “a valentine to movies”, telling co-hosts Andy Greenwald and Chris Ryan that he’s “going to do it as a film noir. The book is more about art and paintings, but I’m going to make it more a movie within a movie. And it’s a really nasty, wonderful, little thriller.” And finally, he expressed his hopes to use the same crew that he worked with for The Queen’s Gambit, meaning that we know what to expect.
Who Is Cast In Laughter After Dark?
While the news of the adaptation has only just surfaced, there is limited information on who will be starring in the film. But according to Frank, Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma) has signed on for the lead role as Margot Peters, an even darker protagonist than Beth Harmon. And if her performance in The Queen’s Gambit is anything to go by, we’re in for a treat.
