By now you've probably heard of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision to scale back from the Royal Family and move to the idyllic Canadian mountains. Well, maybe not the Rockies but to the land of Justin Trudeau and maple syrup. On January 9, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle formally announced they'd be taking a step back as 'senior royals' to focus on new endeavours, much to the shock of the public (and according to some reports, the Queen herself).

In addition to moving away from their positions in the royal family, Harry and Meghan also revealed their plans to become "financially independent". A lengthy statement posted on the Sussexes' official Instagram account further explained their decision:
"After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.
"We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages."
It's unsurprising that the announcement caused a stir online. Take a look below at some of the hilarious, insightful, and of course, hateful Twitter commentary.
