The Most Googled Australian Woman Of 2016 Was…

Journalist Tara Brown.

As 2016 draws to a close (ugh no complaints from us) it’s time to take a look back and reflect on the year that was.

Google have released their top search lists for 2016 with some surprising, and some not so surprising results.

The most googled woman in Australia this wasn’t a Bachelorette star or Lara Worthington but rather journalist Tara Brown, the 60 minutes presenter who was detained in Lebanon after the now-infamous failed child rescue attempt

However Tara was actually third on the list of Aussies after NRL star Mitchell Pearce – who went on an alcohol-fueled bender earlier this year and was filmed in an inappropriate position with a poodle.. And while Molly Meldrum came in at number two there’s a definite theme in this year’s list with sporting stars taking out five of the top 10 spots, and politicians Pauline Hanson and Malcolm Turnbull making an appearance following this year’s federal election.

Here’s the full list of Aussies:

  1. Mitchell Pearce
  2. Molly Meldrum
  3. Tara Brown
  4. Pauline Hanson
  5. Mel McLaughlin
  6. Rebecca Wilson
  7. Peter Brock
  8. Sonia Kruger
  9. Malcolm Turnbull
  10. Michelle Jenneke

As for global searches, this year is was all about the US election with Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton taking out the top two spots.

Following that there’s a Irish mixed martial arts star, Making a Murderer subject Steven Avery, and then Melania Trump and Meghan Markle – who was also subsequently – and unsurprisingly – the most googled actress of 2016.

Here’s the full list:

  1. Donald Trump
  2. Hillary Clinton
  3. Conor McGregor
  4. Steven Avery
  5. Melania Trump
  6. Meghan Markle
  7. OJ Simpson
  8. Chris Gayle
  9. Tom Hiddleston
  10. Brad Pitt

And finally here’s the overall list of topics Aussie’s were googling in 2016:

  1. US election
  2. Olympics
  3. Census
  4. Euro 2016
  5. Australian Open 2016
  6. Pokemon Go
  7. Donald Trump
  8. iPhone 7
  9. David Bowie
  10. Prince

 Here’s to a brighter 2017!
