If, like us, you’ve fallen head over heels for the zombie-fighting duo that is Joel and Ellie from The Last Of Us then you’ll be pleased to know the series is officially returning for another season.
It comes as no surprise after the post-apocalyptic drama became HBO’s second most-watched series premiere in more than a decade, falling only behind Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon in viewership.
With everything from a star-studded cast list – most sharing an uncanny resemblance to their video game counterparts – to the bitingly funny banter of our two protagonists, The Last Of Us had us hooked from the get-go.
So, in light of the news that the show has been renewed for a second season, we’ve gathered everything you need to know, including the release date, plot and cast.
When will season 2 of The Last of Us come out?
No details on the release date for season two have been revealed just yet, but we’re hoping it comes sooner rather than later. If we were to guess we’re most likely looking at waiting until late 2024 or early 2025 for season two to be ready to watch.
As a small consolation, however, Variety confirmed that production will begin in February this year – so it shouldn’t be too long until we get a confirmed release date.

What will season 2 of The Last of Us be about?
While the plot for season two is still under wraps, we can look at the video game to give us a hint of what to expect.
The Last Of Us Part II takes place five years after the first game, introducing fans to Ellie at the age of 19 as she hunts down a stranger known as Abby across the country to the ruined outskirts of Seattle.
Although, the show might choose to explore the period between Part I and II that we haven’t seen before in season two, and an eventual season three adapt Part II directly.
Who will be in the cast of The Last Of Us season 2?
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are all but guaranteed to return to their roles Joel, a tough-as-nails survivor, and Ellie, his equally fierce adoptive daughter, respectively.
This season will also introduce several newcomers; Kaitlyn Dever as Ellie’s adversary Abby; Young Mazino as Ellie’s friend Jesse, and Isabela Merced as Ellie’s romantic interest Dina.
