Why ‘Hereditary’ Is Being Called The Most Terrifying Movie Of The Year

Gulp

After debuting at the Sundance Film Festival this month, the Toni Collette-led horror film Hereditary is being called today’s answer to The Exorcist. And for a very good reason: the newly released trailer alone is goddamn terrifying.

Hereditary tells the story of Annie (Toni Collette), who is coming to terms with the death of her mother while raising a son and daughter of her own. She and her husband (Gabriel Byrne) are haunted by their past, their house and seemingly, their children.

The trailer is visually stunning and full of suspense (yes, this writer audibly gasped at one moment). Think crawling ants, someone on fire (gulp), a decapitated pigeon and miniature dollhouses (perhaps the scariest thing of all?).

Critics are raving about Hereditary, with USA Today labelling it a “modern-day horror masterpiece” and Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman declaring that it might be “the most exciting movie I’ve seen at Sundance this year”.

There’s already Oscars buzz for Collette, who has excelled at being scared to death on screen since 1999’s The Sixth Sense.

Another reason we’re believing the hype for Hereditary: it’s produced by the same studio responsible for the fantastic feminist horror flick The Witch, plus Ex Machina.

So grab the popcorn (that you’ll probably spill everywhere out of sheer terror) and prepare yourself for what might be the scariest film of the year.

Hereditary is expected to be released in Australia in 2018.
