For any Sex and the City fan, the news that the franchise would gain another (arguably unnecessary) addition with a reboot was music to their ears.

And as we wondered which of our favourite characters would return, it was assumed that at the very least, the four leading ladies would have to be back for And Just Like That.

But alas, Kim Cattrall made it clear that she had no plans to reprise her role as the sex-positive, PR agent Samantha Jones. Despite fans’ dismay, her decision was respected, and the show went on—but not entirely without her.

Sprinkled through several episodes, small interactions took place between Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw and her on-screen BFF, Samantha. In the premiere, the first mention of Samantha saw Miranda and Carrie recall how they fell out with her, explaining that a work disagreement led to Sam moving to London and cutting them all off. Then, the messages started.

In the second episode, when Big suddenly passed away from a heart attack, Samantha shared her presence by sending a beautiful casket spray and a note simply saying, “Love, Samantha”. And for the rest of the season, the pair would text back and forth, slowly working to rebuild their relationship.

And while Cattrall wasn’t physically a part of the reboot, the perfectly crafted text messages were so on par with her character that you could almost hear Cattrall saying the words in your head.

But after even more back and forth between Cattrall and Parker, pushing any chance that Cattrall would return to the show, fans beg the question: will Samantha Jones return for And Just Like That… season two? Find out below.

Will Samantha Jones be back for And Just Like That… season 2?

Well, it seems so. While the likelihood of Cattrall returning onscreen is slim to none—after all, she said she’s “done” with the franchise—the return of her character will apparently carry on through the show’s second season.

In an interview with Variety, showrunner Michael Scott King revealed that each of the show’s writers had varying perspectives on how their relationship panned out.

Some may remember that in the first season’s last episode, Carrie was scattering Big’s ashes in Paris, and arranged to meet up with Samantha for a cocktail while she was in Europe. Of course, we never got the chance to see their meeting.

“It’s very funny, because every single one of the writers has a different version of what happened during that conversation,” King told the publication.

“So, I think there was some Champagne. I think there was a grownup back and forth, and a love affair that they realised that something’s more important than being afraid to heal.”

“To me, they had a great night and things became resolved,” he added. “Once Carrie let go of an old, old love, one of her current loves came back in.”

As for whether Samantha will still be a faceless presence in the show’s second season, it seems likely that will be her fate. Especially given that Parker recently told Variety that there’s “too much history” between the two for anything more to happen.

Here’s hoping we get to hear Sam’s thoughts on the whole Miranda and Steve situation.
