PSA: Anya Taylor-Joy Has Been Spotted Watching ‘Elvis’ At A Local And Historical Sydney Cinema

Spotted.

Whether they’re in Australia to shoot their next project or just here for a soak in the sun, celebrities far and wide have clearly decided that Australia is on their must-go list.

And now, the next famous face to sail into our shores is Anya Taylor-Joy.

Any fan of the 26-year-old would know that the Queen’s Gambit star has been relocated to New South Wales, more specifically Broken Hill, to film Furiosa, the prequel film to the Mad Max series. For the film, Anya is set to star as a young Imperator Furiosa, the war captain who was previously played by Charlize Theron in the 2015 film, Mad Max: Fury Road. But she’s not the only star in Australia, Anya has been joined by the likes of Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, all working on the 2024 film.

But in her downtime, it turns out that Anya has enjoyed heading to the coast, likely enjoying jaunts around Sydney’s seaside. But more recently, The Northman star was seen doing what us regular folk enjoy doing on our time off, catching a movie.

Attending a local, historical cinema in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, Anya was spotted catching the latest Elvis biopic at Randwick’s The Ritz cinema on Monday, July 4. Sharing a selfie with one of their team members and the Emma star, the locally-loved cinema—which is turning 85 this year—posted the snapshot of the two to their social channels, rightfully showing off their A-list customers to the rest of Sydney.

“Last Night in Randwick. Shout out to the utterly bevvitching @anyataylorjoy for popping into the Ritz. Pictured here with our wonderful front-of-house staff Nick,” the post’s caption read.

In the comments, fans were understandly shocked and in awe of the celebrity sighting. One cinema-goer commented, “Okay but also what was she watching?!”, to which the cinema replied with three simple emojis: the microphone, the guitar and the crown. So, naturally, the safe assumption is that she was getting ready to watch Austin Butler’s latest ode to the king of rock ‘n’ roll.

But alas, Anya is far from the first A-list star to cross the threshold at The Ritz. Back in 2019, the internet’s favourite heart throb, Timothée Chalamet, was photographed at the cinema for the premiere of Netflix’s The King, alongside Joel Edgerton.

At the time, the streets were backlogged with eager fans who were desperate to catch a glimpse of the Call Me By Your Name star in the flesh. But for the premiere, fans were not allowed into the establishment, with the guest list strictly restricted to other A-list stars and industry professionals.

So, while not all A-list appearances are within arms reach, there’s clearly something in the water at Randwick’s The Ritz, especially if Hollywood can’t keep away.

As for Anya, it’s not known if she was attending the screening alone or with her partner, Malcolm McRae. The pair sparked engagement rumours earlier this month, when they were spotted at Sydney International Airport.

Stepping onto the tarmac off her private jet, Anya showcased an unexpected accessory that led fans to speculate her musician boyfriend might have popped the question. In the images, which you can see here, Anya can be seen sporting an impressive diamond ring on that finger in front of paparazzi, before she quickly shielded it from view.

However, one eyewitness reported that Anya looked “ecstatic” and flashed the ring “at her driver before getting in the car”.

“She was either showing off the ring or doing a dance move,” the source, who chose to remain anonymous, claimed.

Engaged or not, we’re glad that Anya got to enjoy one of the eastern suburbs’ most treasured establishments.
