New York Nanny Accused Of Fatally Stabbing Two Children

The kids, aged 2 and 6, were under her care

It’s the worst nightmare of every parent who leaves their child in care.

In New York, an Upper West Side nanny has been accused of killing two young children she was looking after.

As New York Times reports, prosecutors say mother Marina Krim arrived home in October 2012 to find her children, Lulu, 6, and Leo, 2, stabbed to death in her apartment. She also allegedly saw her nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, cutting her own throat with a kitchen knife.

Ms Krim had been picking up her third child from a swimming lesson at the time of the tragic incident.

Ms Ortega was hospitalised and originally confessed to the children’s’ deaths from her bedside, aformer assistant district attorney testified.

“She admitted that she had killed the kids and that she had used at least two knives,” former Manhattan prosecutor, Gregory B. LeDonnem, said at a pre-trial hearing in Manhattan Supreme court, The NY Daily News reports.

“She indicated she was mad at the mom.”

The hearing is currently determining whether Ms Ortega’s post-arrest statements are admissible in court. Her lawyer, Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg, said authorities should not have interviewed her at the hospital without a lawyer present.

At the time, Ms Ortega was unable to speak when questioned because she was hooked up to a ventilator. She was asked by investigators to point at a chart to indicate yes and no answers.

Ms. Van Leer-Greenberg also argued that Ms. Ortega was too sick to answer questions truthfully.

Ms Ortega’s trial is set to begin with jury selection in September. The 55-year-old has pleaded not guilty to killing the two children in 2012.
