Taken: Natalee Holloway premieres on Netflix tonight, November 4, revisiting the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway. The American teenager was holidaying in Aruba when she vanished, with the case capturing global attention and sparking a decades-long search for answers.

According to Tudum, the three-part documentary will see Natalee’s mother, Beth Holloway, sharing her account of the case for the first time, whilst also “revealing forgotten moments [and] previously unreported elements.”

Although Aruban authorities never prosecuted Joran van Der Sloot for Natalee’s murder due to insufficient evidence, he was the main suspect, and ultimately he admitted to killing her nearly two decades on as part of a plea deal. He was 17-years-old when he committed the crime.

His long-awaited confession followed his extradition from Peru to the US, where he faced charges of extortion and wire fraud. According to federal prosecutors, in March 2010, van der Sloot reportedly contacted Beth through her lawyer, John Q. Kelly, offering to reveal the location of Natalee’s body in exchange for $250,000, with $25,000 required upfront.

According to ABC News, the FBI subsequently coordinated a sting operation in Aruba, with John Q. Kelly meeting van der Sloot in a hotel room and giving him $10,000 in cash, while Beth Holloway wired a further $15,000 to van der Sloot’s bank account.

However, after receiving the initial $25,000, van der Sloot led Kelly to a nearby property, reportedly belonging to his late father, claiming Natalee’s body was buried beneath the building’s foundation, which would later prove to be false. Van der Sloot would soon flee Aruba and relocate to Peru.

Despite van der Sloot finally admitting to killing Natalee in October, 2023, he was not prosecuted for her murder, as the 12-year statute of limitations under Aruban law had expired. Instead, he pleaded guilty to extortion and wire fraud in the US for attempting to exploit Beth’s desperate search for answers.

He was sentenced to 20 years in US federal prison, to run concurrently with his existing 28-year sentence in Peru for the 2010 murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores.

What Happened To Natalee Holloway?

In May 2005, a group of high school students from Alabama travelled to Aruba to celebrate their graduation. However, for one family, it became a nightmare when one of the students, Natalee Holloway, never boarded the flight home.

A mass search for the missing teen soon commenced, gaining international media attention, however the case did not reach a major breakthrough until 2023.

According to CNN, a transcript of an interview with his attorney revealed that Joran van der Sloot admitted to killing Holloway on an Aruban beach after she rejected his sexual advances.

Van der Sloot alleged Holloway kneed him in the crotch after rejecting him, prompting him to kick her in the face. He claimed she was then “laying down unconscious, possibly even dead,” according to the transcript, as reported by ABC News.

He went on to describe finding a nearby cinder block and using it to bludgeon Holloway before pushing her body out into the ocean. Despite his admission, her remains have never been found.

The revelation came several years after van der Sloot was convicted of killing another young woman, 21-year-old Stephany Flores. Following his admission, Holloway’s mother, Beth, addressed the court with an emotional statement, saying, “It’s over. Joran van der Sloot is no longer the suspect in my daughter’s murder. He is the killer.”

Joran van der Sloot is currently serving his 28-year sentence for the murder of Stephany Flores at Challapalca prison, a notorious maximum-security correctional facility in Peru that has been described as “inhuman.”

According to The Guardian, he was reportedly sentenced to a further 18 years for smuggling cocaine. However, under Peruvian law, non-life prison sentences can only be served for a maximum total of 35 years.

His time behind bars has also reportedly been marked by threats and violence. In August, NL Times reported that van der Sloot requested a transfer to another prison in Peru, citing death threats from fellow inmates. The reported threats follow an earlier violent incident at Challapalca in 2024, whereby two inmates reportedly attacked van der Sloot in a common area of the prison, per the New York Post.

Taken: Natalee Holloway premieres on Netflix at 7pm AEDT, November 4.
