Emma Watson's Favourite Sustainable And Eco-Friendly Fashion Brands

Emma Watson has long been championing sustainable and eco-friendly fashion, once stating: “The fashion industry is the second-biggest pollutant of freshwater on the planet. It has such a huge environmental impact and such a big human impact." For years, the Harry Potter actress has been dedicated to making sure her sartorial choices, whether on the red carpet or in everyday life, are sustainably and ethically made - and making sure they get the recognition for doing so. 

While promoting her film Beauty and the Beast, Watson created a second Instagram account (@the_press_tour) dedicated to sharing the eco-friendly brands she was wearing. It included a list of fashion's biggest names, like Stella McCartney, Oscar De La Renta and Filippa K, as well as newer and lesser-known brands who were also paving the way to a cleaner industry.

In partnership with online thrift and consignment store, ThredUP, the eco-activist also launched an online tool designed to help you calculate exactly how your fashion consumption is contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Once you’ve completed an easy quiz, the Fashion Footprint Calculator also makes fashion-centric recommendations as to what you can do to shrink your carbon footprint.

On top of being a sustainable brand, Tome is also a female-led, female-focused organisation that no doubt aligns with Watson's feminist sensibilities. The NYC label was founded in 2013 and consistently delivers unique designs with a conscious impact in mind.

On these last days of #earthmonth we want to bing the conversation back to the intersection of #sustainability and #intersectionality (get it?!) with this throwback to @thefrontlash 'You often write about feminism in the fashion industry, how do you think feminism and ethical fashion are part of a similar conversation? "For a lot of people, one or the other is their gateway into being socially conscious. I found that the deeper I go into my #feminism, you're required to be more conscious of other things that factor into it - like #environmentalism, race relationships, the discrepancy of incomes." 'If you could imagine a vision for a new and improved fashion future, what would it look like? "We're entering a really interesting time where it feels like this façade is falling this pretentious, exclusivity, and the vapid nature of [fashion]. I've never felt like I totally was welcome into that [world], and you work in it for a long time and you see that there's really nothing behind it. People have more of a voice than they have ever had before - not just models- but everyone working behind the scenes, everyone making clothing. I hope that we can continue to trend in this social conscious way. To be honest, it scares me to think that it's just a fad. It's trendy now to be a #feminist, it's trendy to be "woke," and then eventually it will fall out of a fashion. I hope that while we're in this moment of a lot of progress being made within this industry that we can make concrete steps [to] establish some kind of foothold." 'Me too. This award-winning label creates fashion that presents a pro-social message of inclusivity and positive identity - all while adhering to its sustainable practices. Using techniques rooted in reusing fabrics from old collections, as well as sourcing end-of-line or damaged stock from British wool mills, London-based Teatum Jones ensures that unused or unwanted fabrics don't end up in landfill, giving them a "better lease of life".

"Absolutely amazing, really sustainable and very smart," Watson once mused of Uruguayan designer Gabriela Hearst. Launched in 2015, the label takes inspiration from Hearst's upbringing on her father's farm, where she learnt the value of methodical production and the importance of responsible consumption of resources. Today the focus remains on ‘honest luxury’, with every piece being crafted from materials from her family’s ranch. Hearst also works with two women’s cooperatives in Uruguay and endeavours to minimise the environmental impact of her fashion shows by reducing the carbon footprint of each presentation.
