And The Winner Of The 2018 BT Emerging Designer Award Is…

The finalists of the BT Emerging Designer Award, Anna Quan, Albus Lumen and Double Rainbouu, presented their new season collections overnight to a judging panel and the wider fashion industry before the 2018 winner of the prestigious award was announced.

Albus Lumen, created by fashion stylist Marina Afonina, took away the top prize, joining the likes of previous recipients Kacey Devlin, Macgraw, Emma Mulholland, Michael Lo Sordo and Christopher Esber.

Below, we talk to Afonina about what’s next for the up-and-coming Aussie label.

What made you want to start your own label?

I always had a desire to design and two years ago felt like the perfect time to start the label. With a background knowledge of the design process, I saw a gap in the market for minimal resort wear.

Can you describe the Albus Lumen woman?
Albus Lumen can be anyone who has confidence in style and taste, it’s not driven by trends.

How does it feel to be the winner of the BT Emerging Designer Award?
It’s very exciting for the brand to be acknowledged by such a prestigious award.

What has been your career highlight?/proudest achievement?
Having our brand picked up by worldwide online retailers Net-A-Porter and Matchesfashion in such a short time frame, as our label has only been around for two years!

What’s been the one piece that you think put you on the map?

Two pieces from our Resort ’18 collection, Lemon Pickers – Anskoka Dress and Fisherman Shirt.

What’s your favourite piece from the current collection?
The Santo top and pant in black.

Who or what has influenced your personal style?
Travel, books and European movies.

What’s the best piece of fashion advice you’ve ever been given?
Keep it simple and be true to yourself!
What trend do you think will never go out of style?
A classic white shirt.
What piece of advice do you have for someone wanting to work in the industry?
Prepare to work hard and even harder. Be patient – it all takes time.

What can people expect from your MBFWA show and next collection?
We feel as though this season is very elevated with new shapes and fabrics. We also have an exciting new accessories collaboration.
