Rado Opens Its First Australian Flagship In The Heart Of Melbourne

Meet Rado's chic new home

Melbourne’s luxury watch scene has a new arrival. Swiss watchmaker Rado has officially opened its first corporate boutique in Australia, taking up residence at 298 Collins Street in the heart of the city’s established luxury retail precinct. The opening is significant for more than its address (although that is fabulous). Melbourne is also the first city in the world to experience Rado’s latest boutique concept, with the Collins Street flagship designed as an immersive introduction to the brand’s craftsmanship, design and material innovation.

Housed within a historic Collins Street building, the boutique retains the character of its heritage façade, framed by three striking arched windows edged in warm gold. And then behind the glass, illuminated Rado branding and contemporary watch displays provide a glimpse into a space that is both modern and timeless. Inside, the mood is just as chic (not to mention warm and cosy on this particular rainy Melbourne morning). Instantly, you’ll find yourself immersed in a palette of soft stone tones, timber flooring, brushed metallic finishes and muted neutrals, all of which create a backdrop designed to keep the watches firmly in the spotlight. Sculptural glass display cases sit throughout the space, while individual timepieces are elevated on freestanding plinths positioned against the boutique’s expansive street-facing windows.

You can feel a residential softness to the design, too. Upholstered armchairs and small tables create places for customers to sit and spend time with the collections, rather than simply moving past traditional display cabinets. And perhaps most fittingly for a brand that calls itself the “Master of Materials”, materiality is everywhere. Curved edges, tactile surfaces and tonal finishes are repeated throughout the boutique, while a dedicated display allows visitors to engage more closely with the materials and finishes behind Rado’s watches.

The design reflects the intention outlined by the brand. Rather than functioning solely as a retail space, the boutique has been conceived as an environment in which customers can physically experience what makes a Rado watch distinctive. That is particularly relevant when it comes to Rado’s signature high-tech ceramic. The brand first introduced high-tech ceramic into serial production in 1986 and has since made the material a defining part of its identity. Lightweight, smooth to the touch, highly scratch-resistant and durable, it has become one of Rado’s most recognisable innovations.

Visitors to the new Melbourne boutique are encouraged to handle the watches and explore those qualities firsthand – from their weight and texture to their construction and finish. “Australia has become an increasingly important market for Rado and we are excited to deepen our presence here through a dedicated boutique experience,” Rado CEO Adrian Bosshard said of the opening. Bosshard described Melbourne, with its appreciation for “design, sport and culture”, as the ideal setting for the brand’s next chapter in Australia, adding that the space had been created to showcase Rado’s pioneering approach, mastery of materials and distinctive design language.

The location itself feels particularly apt. Collins Street’s mix of historic architecture and international luxury brands mirrors the dialogue happening inside the boutique: heritage meeting contemporary design. For Rado, the Australian flagship is both a local milestone and something of a global test case. As the first standalone Rado boutique in Australia and the first worldwide to showcase this new generation of retail design, Melbourne is effectively setting the template for what the future of the brand’s stores could look like.
