Fashion has always borrowed from sport. What it borrows less often is sport’s actual spirit — the risk-taking, the irreverence, the particular electricity of a team that has nothing to lose and knows it. This is what Zimmermann’s Cruise 2027 collection, The Clash, is founded in.
Rooted in the story of Australia II’s 1983 America’s Cup victory — a come-from-behind upset 132 years in the making — it is a collection less interested in sailing’s aesthetics than in its attitude.
The collection is also built on opposing forces: outsiders versus the establishment, raw utility versus unapologetic opulence, the working deck versus the ballroom floor.

What is striking about The Clash is how rigorously — and how elegantly — those dualities are translated into cloth and construction. The collection opens with sailing references that are at once literal and lyrical: a photorealistic sail print on silk chiffon, a cotton drill romper with nautical-rope pulls, fabrics lifted from the geometry of yacht-racing flags. These are not costume references. They are the starting point for something with genuine structural ambition.
Denim, a Zimmermann perennial, takes on sculptural new authority here — a corset bodice top, a cascading asymmetric skirt — while gowns and skirts in silk move with the deliberate theatricality of spinnaker sails catching a gust. Lace flyaway panels flutter at the hem. Nothing is still. The collection insists on motion.
After dark, the narrative pivots. The regatta gives way to the ballroom, but Zimmermann is not interested in the ballroom’s rules. A lavender strapless jumpsuit and an apricot shorts suit with lace underpinnings infiltrate the formality of black-tie dressing with the same irreverence that the Australia II crew brought to Newport — technically flawless, but deeply, confidently themselves. Striped panel lace dresses descend into flair-filled movement. Languid silk jersey separates hold their ground alongside paisley-print silk Duchess satin. The party-crashers, it turns out, own the room.
The colour palette honours the conceit without being enslaved to it. Clean nautical blue, cream and red anchor the opening looks before the collection opens into pastels, deep earthy tones, and sharp pops of crimson — a progression that mirrors the race itself, moving from disciplined preparation into full, exhilarating velocity.
Accessories complete the picture with characteristic precision: boat-style mules, striped canvas and leather barrel bags, scarf-wrapped necklaces, and medallion brooches carry the maritime thread through to the last look. The Cloud 91 bag silhouette — now rendered in basketweave leather — is lightened without being diminished.
