How To Style The Low-Rise Trend If You’re Not Quite Ready For The Full Ab Display

You don't have to bare all.

Whether you love it or loathe it, low-rise styles are back.

The return of the Y2K cut was ushered in by the now infamous Miu Miu mini skirt seen on everyone from Nicole Kidman to Zendaya before taking on a denim form on the runways of Missoni, Diesel and Blumarine (to name a few).

Now, the hip-grazing style has become seemingly inescapable, making its way into the off-duty wardrobes of our favourite models and celebs, and into every high street store.

Derived from an era that perpetuated unrealistic beauty standards and glorified wafer-thin figures, it’s hard not to feel as though we’re regressing back into a state of body exclusivity.

However, Paloma Elsesser’s industry-lauded i-D cover reminded us that trends should be made your own and above all else, it’s about wearing what you want and what you love with confidence.

While the low-slung style has been notoriously paired with tiny crop tops, only polarising the trend further, it doesn’t mean it’s the only fashionable way it can be worn.

In fact, the FROW at Miu Miu’s Paris Fashion Week showed lovers of the style how it’s done, layering key pieces over and under other styles from oversized shirts to frayed knits.

Below, we round up the best way to style low rise pieces without flashing your entire torso.

Balance the baggy

If the Fall/Winter 22 runways at Dion Lee and Versace were anything to go by, corsets are here to stay, and luckily so, because they make the perfect figure flattering top to pair with low rise jeans.

Fitted tops that cinch the waist and cropped sweaters that hint at skin without going bare, will work to balance baggy and low rise bottoms.

Layer, layer, layer

Showing off your undergarments may feel like an antiquated move in your desire to make the trend slightly more conservative, but Bella Hadid has proved otherwise.

The model has been seen layering high waist underwear and hosiery under both low-rise jeans and skirts in a look that covers the stomach while maintaining a sleek silhouette.

At Paris Fashion Week, the famed Miu Miu low-rise pieces were layered over white shirts and high cut briefs.

It’s Not About How Low You Can Go

If you’re not ready to hit the lowest of lows, sartorially speaking, opting for a mid-rise cut in a size up that can be worn at the top of the hips and cover the lower tummy is a great place to start.

Styles with a V-shape waistline that sit above or on the hips and fasten at your lower stomach can also be ultra-flattering as they elongate the torso.
