Adele has opened up about a painful health condition she suffers from which left her “waddling” onstage.

The singer told fans during her New Year’s Eve show in Las Vegas that she suffers from sciatica, a condition which can cause strong pains down one or both legs from the lower back.

The singer was walking around the stage handing out T-shirt launchers to members of the audience when it became obvious she was struggling.

“I’ve got two more I’ve just got to get over to the other side of the stage,” she told fans before adding, “I have to waddle these days as I have really bad sciatica.”

Adele has been performing in Las Vegas since November 2022 as part of her residency, which was postponed earlier in the year and caused her a huge amount of distress.

The singer posted a tearful video in January revealing that she wasn’t ready to commence the show, which was scheduled to begin that month. When she opened her show in November, the singer’s emotion was clear as she warned fans she might be a “bit wobbly” at times.

While it’s unclear how long Adele has been suffering from the health condition, but she has previously spoken about having chronic back pain after she suffered two separate slipped discs.

“I slipped my first disc when I was 15 from sneezing,” she previously explained, “I was in bed and I sneezed and my fifth one flew out. In January, I slipped my sixth one, my L6. And then where I had a C-section, my core was useless.”

What is sciatica?

Scatica is a condition of the sciatic nerve, which runs down the lower back and into the leg. There are several elements that can catalyse the condition including spinal trauma or swollen muscles in the buttock. It occurs when pain travels along the nerve which can result in pain, tingling and numbness in the leg.

Per Health Direct, sciatica pain can be severe but symptoms will often improve over time. If a patient has symptoms of scatica, it is advised that they see a doctor within the first few days of onset. Doctor’s can recommend several therapies for treatment which range from using medication and physical movement to making lifestyle changes.
