Autistic Boy Fighting For His Life After Bullies Set Him Alight

'It was not an accident. It was intentional'

A ten-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being set on fire by bullies at his school in Kerrville, Texas.

Kayden Kulp was left with burns to 20 per cent of his body and is on life support in an induced coma at University Hospital.

One child, whose identity has not been released, has been taken into custody and charged with first-degree arson according to News 4 San Antonio

The boy’s family believe the attack was planned.

“The other kids are saying that he was going to be riding his bike like he always is, my nephew Kayden is going to be riding his bike, and they said we’re going to grab him and take him inside and burn him,” Kelly Mack, the victim’s aunt told News 4 San Antonio.

She says that her nephew was playing in a field with two other boys when one doused him with gasoline and another set him on fire.

“There’s no reason they should not already be incarcerated,” Kayden’s mother Tristyn Hatchett said, according to

“The other boys who were there having been telling kids at school that it was not an accident, that it was intentional.”

“My son is a special guy. He was rowdy and he liked to have fun,” she said. “He considered these guys his friends, but they would make fun of him and pick on him and tease him. He was usually the brunt of that kind of joke, but he kept playing with them.”

A YouCaring page has been set up to help fund Kayden’s treatment and his family and has already raised over $200,000.

Ms Hatchett took to the YouCaring page to provide an update on his condition and tank people for their support, writing:

Kayden is doing a little better today . They have taken him off the epinephrine. He was able to stabilize his heart rate and blood pressure on his own all night. Still on feeding and breathing machines. He is going in for his second dressing change soon. We will know more about the severity of his burns and lung damage afterwards. His swelling seems to be reducing now. The last dressing change caused him to plummet. I will update this afternoon.

And we want to thank… everyone, everywhere for all of the thoughts, prayers and support. I can’t express how grateful we are. Truly amazing. We need the good to outweigh the evil.
