Nicole Kidman has announced that she’s working on a third season of the hit series, Big Little Lies

The first season of the series, which follows five women in California who become embroiled in a murder investigation, is based on the 2014 novel by Liane Moriarty. It debuted in 2017 with Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, and Laura Dern in starring roles.

The show, which Witherspoon and Kidman also produced, won eight Emmy awards before returning for a second season in 2019.

Despite whispers of a third season emerging from various cast and crew over the last few years, fans have long put their hopes aside for a third season of the show—until now.

Taking to the stage at the Ladies Professional Golf Association Q&A event in Florida, Kidman spoke about her experience on the show.

“I loved Big Little Lies,” Kidman said.

“Because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children and I was thinking I was going to retire. And then this situation came along, where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show and create that show. And then all of you watched it and made it a massive success.

And we will be bringing you a third one, just FYI.”

The news has been met with excitement from fans, who are excited to see where Kidman and Witherspoon take the series in season three.

Below, everything we know about season three of Big Little Lies

The women of ‘Big Little Lies’ go running.

Who Will Join The Cast Of Big Little Lies Season Three

At this stage, we don’t know exactly who will be returning to or joining the cast of Big Little Lies season three—but that doesn’t mean we don’t have our suspicions.

Due to her recent comments, we can safely assume that Kidman would be reprising her previous role as Celeste. We also suspect that Witherspoon would return as Madeline, as she has previously spoken about wanting the show to return.

This happened in an interview with the The Timeswhen Witherspoon also joked about wanting Jennifer Aniston to join the Big Little Lies cast.

After Aniston said, “We wrapped The Morning Show, she went directly to another show. There is no hanging out to be done with this hard-working woman,” Witherspoon was quick to reply, “Come on Big Little Lies.”

We’re secretly hoping this means Jen might be joining the cast of season three.

Based off previous comments, we’re also guessing that Laura Dern would return as Renata. At the Golden Globes in 2020, Dern spoke about reprising her previous role, stating “Well when Reese [Witherspoon] and Nicole [Kidman] get back here you ask them, but I can never say no to Renata, and she is a dream come true to play so it’s impossible to not want to play her more and be with truly my best friends.”

We’re also hoping that the rest of the cast, including Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, Adam Scott and all of the children (who would now be in their teen years).

Sadly however, the show will be returning without director Jean-Marc Vallée, who died in 2021 due to a fatal cardiac arrhythmia.

What Is The Plot Of Big Little Lies Season Three?

While we don’t yet know the plot of season three, we’re guessing it will be picking up where season two left of. If you need a reminder, when we last saw the Monterey five, Celeste had won custody of her children against her ex-husband’s mother. Madeline and Ed renewed their vows, Bonnie told Nathan that she doesn’t love him, while Jane and Corey progressed with their relationship. Most pivotally, Bonnie texts the others that she’s going to confess about Perry’s death and the other women accompany her to the police station.

This of course, leaves plenty of interesting plot developments for season three.

When Will Big Little Lies Be Released?

At this early stage, we don’t have any information regarding a potential release date—but we will keep you updated when we do.
