When Big Little Lies premiered, it nestled itself deep into our psyche – the secrets, the lies the elegant façades buckling under the pressure.
Over two award-winning seasons, we’ve followed these women through trauma, motherhood, love, jealousy, grief and every flawed choice they’ve made, mostly while staring steely eyed into the rear view of a Range Rover on some very scenic Monterey cliff.
So, when Nicole Kidman dropped the news that season 3 is happening, fans everywhere exhaled.
Things went cold for some time, but now we have some news that the show is on the move, finally.
As per Variety’s reporting, Mr. And Mrs. Smith co-writer Francesca Sloane has come on board to pen the first episode of the next instalment in HBO’s immensely popular adaptation/expansion of Liane Moriarty’s nominative mystery book.
Finally in development after years of enthusiastic cast campaigning, the third season of the award-winning series is expected to see series regulars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley all return as the five Californian women coming into each others’ lives by the death of a narcissistic abuser (Alexander Skarsgård).

Who Is Returning To Big Little Lies Season Three?
- Nicole Kidman & Reese Witherspoon are poised to return in their roles as Celeste & Madeline.
- Laura Dern is expected to return as the vivacious and controversial Renata.
- Zoe Kravitz, Shailene Woodley, Adam Scott and all the child cast from former seasons – though older now are rumoured to reprise their roles.
- There’s speculation around Jennifer Aniston joining the cast, after some light teasing in interviews.
- One bittersweet change: the show will be moving forward without director Jean-Marc Vallée, who sadly passed away in 2021.
What Is The Plot Of Big Little Lies Season Three?
Season 3 likely picks up fairly soon after Season 2’s cliff-hanger, where Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) intends to confess to the police about Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgård) death, and the other Monterey Five accompany her to the station.
Celeste (Nicole Kidman) has secured custody of her children again, while Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) and Ed (Adam Scott) have renewed their vows. Meanwhile, Jane (Shailene Woodley) and Corey are together and Bonnie has admitted she no longer loves Nathan, prompting the suggestion of their relationship falling apart.
Kidman has teased that the next chapter will explore “the richness of the storylines”, particularly how these women and their children evolve as time moves on.
The kids are older now, that opens up new tensions, new conflicts, and the potential for new alliances.
What We Still Don’t Know And What We’re Curious About
Despite all this, there are key pieces missing – and they’re the ones that will make or break how this season lands.
- Exactly how the story will unfold. Will we see legal fallout from Bonnie’s confession? Will the Monterey Five fracture under all the pressure?
- Which new characters will be introduced. (and how they’ll shake up the dynamic). If Aniston is truly joining, what role will she take?
- Tone & Scope: Will the show keep its intimate feel (focussed on relationships, small betrayals, subtle power plays), or expand into darker, broader territory?
