Ryan Gosling is heading back to space in the new trailer for the upcoming sci-fi comedy Project Hail Mary.
The film from Amazon MGM Studios follows the story of Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling), who’s tasked with an impossible choice; accept the mission to save earth, or die “with the rest of us.”
Directed by Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary is based on the Andy Weir novel of the same name. Adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard, this will be the second book-to-blockbuster adaptation for Weir, who’s previous box office hit, The Martian, was released in 2015.
While the trailer depicts Gosling’s character as a reluctant participant in the high stakes spectacle, it’s not his first time donning a space suit. Although, admittedly, his role as Neil Armstrong in 2018’s First Man, feels light years away from the comedic character we see in the film’s first look.
Below, everything you need to know about Project Hail Mary, including trailer, plot, cast and release date.
What’s In The Trailer For Project Hail Mary?

After waking up with long hair, no memory and apparently “several light-years from my apartment”, Gosling’s character is heard insisting: “I’m not an astronaut,” over and over.
As the trailer for Project Hail Mary continues, the audience is offered an explanation for his apparent reluctance through his co-star Sandra Hüller’s character.
Sitting opposite the adamant Ryland is Eva Stratt (Hüller), who explains what’s really at stake should he choose to ignore the mission. “If you don’t go you die, with the rest of us. The sun is dying, you are the only scientist who might know what this is,” she tells the middle-school teacher.
We learn that the mission is dubbed ‘Hail Mary’ due to its near-impossible ask: to find out why the sun, and its surrounding stars, are all dying “except one.”
Despite the seriousness of the situation, the underlying comedic relief offered by Ryland’s character is immediately evident. “I put the ‘not’ in astronaut,” Ryland protests. “I can’t even moonwalk!”
The light humour continues throughout, as Sign Of The Times by Harry Styles blasts across a montage of Ryland slowly coming to terms with his fate. There’s even an alien involved, who Ryland names Rocky. “He’s kind of growing on me,” he admits. “At least he’s not growing in me, which was a concern for a little while.”
Who Is In The Cast?

Gosling stars in the film as Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher with a doctorate in molecular microbiology. His German superior Eva Grace, is played by Sandra Hüller, whose breakout role in Anatomy of The Fall earned her critical acclaim.
Joining the cast is The Bear’s star baker, Lionel Boyce, and Ken Leung, who audiences will recognise from Industry.
When Is It Out?
Project Hail Mary is set to launch in cinemas on March 20, 2026. And yes, while it might feel light years away now, waiting for a new Ryan Gosling movie to drop can certainly help the time pass quicker.
