‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Stars Spill On “Big Changes” To Season Three

Fans will be "heartbroken but also satisfied"
The Summer I Turned Pretty season three stars, Chris Briney and Gavin Casalegno

Three years ago, the world fell in love with a show about a girl falling in love with two brothers, promtly igniting a debate that would divide friends, the internet and even generations. Yes, we’re talking about none other than The Summer I Turned Pretty

Now, as season three approaches, the question we’ve all been arguing over – who should Belly choose – will finally be answered. Not before a little, or according to our two romantic leads Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno a lot, of heartbreak.

“I’d like to think that no matter what side you’re on, no matter what you hope does or doesn’t happen by the end of it, I think there will be some heartbreak for everyone,” Christopher tells marie claire Australia when we sit down to chat.

Gavin nods along in agreement, before adding, “there’s gonna be a lot of people, you know, heartbroken but also satisfied.”

Of course, fans of the books may think they know what’s coming, but having read the series themselves, Christopher and Gavin both admit there was “plenty that surprised” them about how season three plays out.

The four (rather than two) year time jump between seasons was the first change fans picked up on – a decision that only heightens the stakes with Belly, Conrad and Jeremiah’s maturity adding weight to their decisions.

Without giving much away, Gavin hints there will be more changes to come: “Jenny [Han] is able to still keep true to the story and the love of the characters, while also adding things in a way that would make you least expect it.

“There’s definitely some pretty big changes that I feel like people are going to really appreciate.”

To no surprise (and our best attempts), neither of the show’s love interests will let slip which of them Belly chooses in the end, but we’re assured the “right choice” is made.

“If it’s true to her heart, then yeah [she picks correctly],” Christopher says thoughtfully as Gavin notes, “right” will feel different to every viewer: “I think right is subjective.”

With a definitiveness, Christopher adds finally, “If it has Jenny’s seal of approval, then it must be the right choice.”

We’ll have to wait and see if we agree…

The Summer I Turned Pretty premieres on Prime Video on July 16th.
