To this day, the final season of Game of Thrones remains one of the most contentious in television history. A year on, the duo behind bringing George R.R. Martin’s novels to life have signed on to adapt an iconic trilogy series to life – and fans are, rightfully so, a little apprehensive.
Variety reports that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signed on to adapt Liu Cixen’s Three-Body Problem sci-fi series, in collaboration with writer and producer Alexander Woo.
The upcoming project will reportedly cover all three novels – The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End — which Woo described in a statement to the outlet as “one of the great masterpieces of Chinese science-fiction.”
Originally published in 2008, Liu’s series chronicles a world where humans have made contact with aliens from a neighbouring solar system and follow the ways the relationship between the two species affects humanity on both a grand and individual scale.
“Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe,” Benioff and Weiss said in a statement. “We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this to life for audiences around the world.”
Considering the popularity of Liu’s work, it’s unsurprising that fans are expressing their concerns over bringing it to the small screen. Many took to social media to share their scepticism about the duo’s latest venture, especially considering the cultural significance of the trilogy.
