Hamilton Island is entering a new era. Following its acquisition by global investment firm Blackstone, the much-loved Whitsundays destination is building on the legacy established by the Oatley family while sharpening its focus on world-class food, wellness, culture and conservation. The leadership team is also evolving, with Renae Trimble appointed Chief Operating Officer and Chris Mills set to commence as Chief Executive Officer later this year. Both joined guests on the island for Hamilton Island Race Week 2026, presented by American Express – an event that offered an early glimpse of the destination’s ambitious new direction.
While the sailing remained the headline act, the onshore program established Race Week as much more than a sporting event. At luxury resort qualia, a special culinary residency brought together three-Michelin-starred French chef Pascal Barbot, from Paris restaurant L’Astrance, and Lennox Hastie, the acclaimed chef behind Sydney’s Firedoor and Gildas. The pair worked alongside qualia Executive Chef Joshua Hingston and his culinary team to create a series of exclusive dining experiences.
Australian jewellery designer Margot McKinney was also in residence, giving guests an intimate look at her distinctive creations. Known for working with vivid gemstones and South Sea pearls, McKinney draws inspiration from Australia’s tropical landscapes and marine life – making qualia a particularly fitting setting for her designs.
Race Week also marked the launch of Fluidform at qualia, a private movement and recovery program developed by Fluidform founder Kirsten King. Available through pavilion televisions or guests’ smartphones, the self-guided sessions can be completed in-room or throughout the resort. The tailored three-, five- and seven-day programs span post-flight mobility, strength, restoration and mindful movement, allowing travellers to maintain their routines without leaving the privacy of their pavilion.

Elsewhere on the island, chef Josh Niland was joined by cook, author and television personality Khanh Ong for a collaborative long lunch at The Sundays’ Catseye Pool Club. Presented by American Express, the event combined a shared menu with a conversation between the two culinary figures.
It followed another high-profile Catseye Pool Club collaboration in June, when New York chef Wylie Dufresne brought his cult-favourite Stretch Pizza concept to Hamilton Island for one night. Hosted by Josh and Julie Niland, the evening paired Dufresne’s pizzas with cocktails curated by Bar Director Sam Cocks and live jazz overlooking Catseye Bay.

Hamilton Island’s Dining Scene Levels Up
Food has become central to Hamilton Island’s evolving identity, with five of its restaurants recognised in the 2026 Australian Good Food Guide Awards. Bommie Restaurant received Two Chef Hats, while Long Pavilion, Pebble Beach, Catseye Pool Club and the Clubhouse at Hamilton Island Golf Club each earned One Chef Hat.
Executive Chef Ryan Locke has taken charge of the kitchens at Bommie and Beach Club, introducing menus that highlight seasonal produce, native ingredients and more sustainable practices. At Hamilton Island Golf Club, Executive Chef Alice James is overseeing the Clubhouse’s popular lunch offering, served with panoramic views across the Whitsundays.
Qualia’s dining program is changing, too. Under Executive Chef Joshua Hingston, Pebble Beach now offers a more flexible evening menu arranged around four themes: Ocean, Garden, Pasture and Sweet. Guests can also experience High Tea at Long Pavilion.
At Beach Club, the new Ocean Table offers an intimate waterfront dining experience, while Talk & Taste brings a hosted food-and-wine journey – long popular at qualia – to another of the island’s luxury properties.
The rejuvenated Sails precinct, which reopened in December 2025, has introduced its own fresh energy. The restaurant now serves relaxed modern Australian food from breakfast until sunset, while a swim-up bar and reserved poolside Sails Sunbed Series make the most of its Catseye Bay outlook. Casual additions HI Fresh and frozen yoghurt bar HI-Yo round out the precinct.

Award-winning Island Stays
The island’s newest hotel, The Sundays, is already attracting international attention. Just one year after opening, the boutique property and its signature restaurant were named Resort of the Year in the Gourmet Traveller Hotel & Travel Awards 2026. It was also included in Travel + Leisure’s 2026 It List of the world’s best new hotels.
The Sundays has brought a fresh kind of luxury to Hamilton Island. It’s first new hotel to open on the island in 18 years, the $35 million boutique resort has quickly carved out a distinctive place within the Whitsundays’ accommodation landscape. While qualia and Beach Club offer adults-only escapism, The Sundays delivers an elevated family holiday without compromising on style, service or sophistication.
With just 59 rooms, the experience feels intimate and considered. Interiors by Carrie Williams combine sandy neutrals and soft coastal pastels, allowing the spectacular setting to take centre stage. Every room looks towards the Coral Sea, while ground-floor terraces open directly onto lawns where children can play. Thoughtful touches – including “mermoney” tokens that can be exchanged for poolside ice-creams – add a welcome sense of fun for younger guests.
At the heart of the resort is Catseye Pool Club, led by acclaimed chefs Josh and Julie Niland. Inspired by the generous Sunday lunches they enjoy with their own family, the restaurant’s share-style menu celebrates mud crab, tiger prawns and wild-caught fish sourced close to the island, alongside dishes such as Greek-style lamb shoulder and grilled beef short ribs. A Queensland-focused cocktail list by Saint Peter Bar Director Sam Cocks completes the experience. Relaxed, beautifully designed and refreshingly family-friendly, The Sundays proves luxury travel with children can still feel genuinely special.
Qualia, meanwhile, continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Australia’s leading luxury lodges. Its 2026 accolades include a place in Condé Nast Traveler’s inaugural Triple Crown, La Liste’s World’s Best Hotels and 50 Best Discovery, following its recognition with a MICHELIN Key in 2025.

Culture Under The Stars
Beyond sailing and dining, Hamilton Island is expanding its cultural program. In May, its long-running partnership with The Australian Ballet saw the return of the sold-out Pas de Deux in Paradise at qualia’s Pebble Beach. Principal Artists Sharni Spencer and Davi Ramos joined Soloists Marko Juusela and Samara Merrick for an open-air performance overlooking the Coral Sea. The program included classical and contemporary works, with excerpts from The Sleeping Beauty, Flames of Paris and Grand Pas Classique, as well as The Dying Swan. Guests were also invited behind the scenes through rehearsals, barre classes, masterclasses and beginner ballet sessions. The 2026 season was captured on film for the first time, with the live event scheduled to return to qualia in 2028.

A Continued Focus On Conservation
Hamilton Island’s next chapter is also extending beneath the waterline. Through its collaboration with Eco Barge Clean Seas, the island supported the removal of more than 7.5 tonnes of marine debris from 104 beaches over the past year, as well as the rehabilitation of 18 sea turtles. In 2026, Hamilton Island also became a supporter of Whales of the Whitsundays, an initiative dedicated to protecting the region’s humpback whales. The program builds on the Whitsundays’ 2024 designation as a Whale Heritage Area, recognising its importance as a calving ground and the local community’s commitment to cetacean conservation.
With new leadership, ambitious culinary partnerships and an increasingly sophisticated program of wellness, culture and environmental initiatives, Hamilton Island is positioning itself for a new generation of travellers – while keeping the natural beauty that made it famous firmly at the centre of the experience.
Scandinavian Style Arrives on Front Street
Volvo Cars brought a touch of Scandinavian style to Front Street during Hamilton Island Race Week, inviting guests to explore the fully electric EX90 and XC60 T8 Plug-in Hybrid up close. Visitors could meet the Volvo team, discover the latest innovations in electric and hybrid motoring and enter to win premium July luggage. Each morning, the fully electric Volvo EX30 also delivered a little Swedish indulgence around the island, handing out traditional cinnamon buns while supplies lasted.
