“Confessions Of A…” is a weekly series by marie claire dishing the dirty little secrets of different professions. Put the kettle on, we’re about to spill some tea…
This week, we sit down with Spirit Alignment Mentor Tracey Dimech to talk about how she learnt to control and understand her psychic abilities.
When delivering messages from the other side, Dimech is honest and upfront – she won’t tell you what you want to hear, but what you need to hear. Them’s the rules.
Here, Dimech gets candid about her connection to the afterlife…
“My earliest memory of communicating with spirits happened when I was three. I had packed my clothes into the nappy bin and run away to the park next door, moving all my stuff under the silver slippery dip.
Understandably, my mum had a heart attack because I had run away on my own, but in my mind, I hadn’t been on my own; my friends were there.
The first time I met a spirit I recognised was when I was six, and it was my step-grandfather Ray who had passed away. We called him Yay.
On the day of his funeral, my three young cousins and I stayed at my auntie’s house, which is where Ray lived. I saw him walk past the window outside and then through the back door. He came inside, winked at us, smiled, and said, ‘I’ve come to say goodbye.’ Then he turned around and walked back outside. I heard the sound of the door shutting behind him.
When everyone came home from the funeral, my auntie said, ‘It’s okay, Yay is resting now and he’s gone to heaven.’ I said, ‘Yeah I know, he came to say goodbye.’ I remember getting a really strange look from her, but I didn’t understand that I was the only one experiencing these things.
I took me a long time to understand my abilities. It was quite lonely and tough as a teenager; I never felt understood. It wasn’t until I started drama classes at school that I learnt about empathy and realised I was an extremely empathic person.
Being a medium, I have all the psychic abilities – clairvoyance, clairsentience, clairaudience and clairognizance. Using those abilities, I can bring crystal clear images and messages through the spirit realm. To do so, I have to raise my consciousness through meditation.
Because I’m a natural medium, I was born with these abilities so I didn’t have to learn to develop them. I just have to set my intention and connect to the client in front of me to call the spirit realm, essentially like a telephone. I can feel the spirit when they step into the room and see exactly what they look like. I speak to them telepathically and then repeat the messages to the client; usually, the spirit takes me through their death, which is how I validate who the spirit is with the client.
When I’m doing a reading, I sit in between spirit form and human form and I feel a buzz, like my body is softly humming and is hyper-alert and sensitive. I’ve only recently learnt how to turn off my abilities and to save my energy, because it’s exhausting!
I worked as a visual merchandiser before I started my professional psychic medium business in 2017. I charge $120 for a standard reading and $180 for a spirit alignment mentoring session, which involves in-depth healing.
The hardest part of my job is managing expectations about what a psychic can do. I’ve had people ask if I could find the cure for cancer. Unfortunately not.
I have a rule that I don’t give bad news. I don’t get messages about health-related issues unless they are curable, preventable or manageable. I don’t want the responsibility of preventing future illness. If someone has a cough, I might say, please go and get it checked for peace of mind.
There are a lot of psychics who will only tell you what you want to hear, I don’t do that. I always try to give the spirit’s message justice and make them proud.
I got a text message from a client last year that said, ‘I just wanted to let you know that you were right,’ with a picture of an ultrasound. The woman had come to me a month earlier and told me she’d been trying to get pregnant for nearly five years and had finally decided to see a fertility doctor. I didn’t want to give her false hope, but I said, ‘I feel like you’re not going to need that appointment.’ She asked, ‘What is that supposed to mean?’ And I just winked because I knew she was already pregnant, but I didn’t want her to find out like that.
In the message with the ultrasound picture, she wrote, ‘You already knew, didn’t you?’
There are a lot of misconceptions about psychics. Some people expect me to be a hippy or a witch – I’m not. If you met me, you wouldn’t know what I do.
I have had sceptics book and pay for a reading. When they do, I say, ‘Please respect your time and money – and my time and the spirit’s time – and leave your scepticism at the door. I promise I will remind you to pick it up on the way out.’
My powers do freak out some people, but my closest friends believe me 100 per cent and are supportive.
My husband completely gets it. Our son was three when we found out he was a medium, as well (he’s 11 now). It freaked my husband out, so I found a mentor who taught me how to turn my powers on and off so I could help my son and make sure he wasn’t scared of it.
I want people to know that psychic readings aren’t scary; they’re a really beautiful experience. Everyone is born with the gift of intuition, some people just have stronger psychic abilities than others.”
