As the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games came to a close just days ago, the headlines rightly centred on extraordinary athleticism, resilience and record-breaking performances.

But behind every medal moment was something far less visible, and just as essential. Time itself.

Serving once again as Official Timekeeper, Omega oversaw every result across the Games, where around 600 athletes competed in 79 medal events spanning Para alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ice hockey, snowboard and wheelchair curling. It marked another chapter in the brand’s longstanding partnership with the Paralympics, which dates back to 1992.

At this level, precision is not simply technical, it is philosophical. In races decided by the smallest of margins, Omega’s Scan ‘O’ Vision Ultimate photofinish camera captured up to 40,000 images per second, allowing judges to determine results with remarkable clarity.

Photoelectric cells, projecting light beams across the finish line, ensured the clock stopped at the exact instant of contact, while the Quantum Timer measured performances to a millionth of a second.

Yet Paralympic timekeeping demands more than accuracy alone. It requires a system that reflects the complexity of competition itself. In Para biathlon, visually impaired athletes competed using an audio targeting system, where pitch guided precision.

Across multiple disciplines, factored timing recalibrated results based on classification, creating a more equitable field of play. Here, time is not just measured, but thoughtfully adjusted.

The scale of the operation was equally significant. More than 150 timekeepers and on-site professionals worked alongside 100 trained volunteers, supported by 50 tonnes of equipment and over 50 kilometres of cables and optical fibre. It is an intricate, largely unseen network, operating in quiet synchrony beneath the spectacle.

To mark the occasion, Omega also unveiled two commemorative timepieces, including the Speedmaster 38mm and Seamaster Diver 300M Milano Cortina 2026 editions.

Both reflect the icy palette of the Games, with frosted detailing and subtle nods to the Paralympic emblem.

If the Paralympics celebrate what the body can achieve, Omega’s role is to ensure that every moment is captured with absolute fidelity.
