Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover Are Starring In A New ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’

The dream team making the one 2021 reboot we'll allow

Between the remakes of Sex and the CityWinx ClubThe Powerpuff GirlsGossip Girl and a multitude of others we can barely keep up with, the general trend on TV currently seems to lean towards “make old new again.” A commendable sentiment when it comes to extending the life of a vintage treasure or Depop bargain, but perhaps a little overdone when it comes to entertainment? One reboot that we are genuinely, actually looking forward to however comes from dream team Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover.

The comedian-actress and multi-talent musician-actor-producer are joining forces on a new series based on the 2005 film Mr. And Mrs. Smith. Yes, they are presumably taking on the titular roles originated by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and we cannot wait. The news came via social media: Glover taking the route of a Fortnite dance to share the announcement of the upcoming Amazon Prime series. Meanwhile, Waller-Bridge went the route of a TikTok trend. Mimicking the beginning of the popular silhouette challenge, she walks over to her doorframe to recreate Jolie’s pose on the Mr. & Mrs. Smith poster.

As well as starring in the series, both Waller-Bridge and Glover will serve as executive producers on the show. The team is rounded out by co-creator Francesa Sloane, currently a writer on Glover’s show Atlanta, who’ll serve as the reboot’s showrunner. Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, shared the announcements to her own social media, as well as revealing that the 2005 film’s studio New Regency Productions would be involved with the reboot.

Plot and cast details beyond this initial announcement are thin on the ground, but we can apparently expect the series in 2022. Waller-Bridge and Glover have previously graced screens together in Solo, the 2018 Star Wars standalone film. Separately, both have also proven their comedy chops: Waller-Bridge with the acclaimed Fleabag and Glover in his time on the sitcom Community.

Suffice to say, we will be waiting here until we see a blow-for-blow remake of that fight scene. This time, with 100% more fourth-wall-breaking asides.
