Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers for Red Notice.
If you haven’t already heard of Netflix’s latest film release Red Notice, you’ll undoubtedly know all about it the next time you log on to the streaming platform.
Now comfortably sitting at the top of Australia’s most-watched list, the action comedy has all the makings of a hit blockbuster.
Why? It’s an art heist film starring A-listers Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson in the lead roles—that in itself is a recipe for sure-fire success.
The film follows agent John Hartley (Johnson), and two skilled “thieves”, The Bishop (Gadot) and Nolan Booth (Reynolds) as they try to recover three invaluable eggs believed to have once belonged to Cleopatra.
After an unexpected twist (more on that below), the story comes to an end with the dysfunctional egg-capturing trio readying themselves for a whole new heist. But what is it? Well, we reckon a sequel will answer that.
Here, everything we know about a possible second instalment to Red Notice.
Will there be a Red Notice 2?
There’s no set confirmation as to whether Red Notice will get a sequel, but there are several clues to suggest it could definitely happen.
Following a hefty bidding war, Netflix attained rights to stream the film just days after it hit theatres via its original distributor, Universal Pictures. It looks like the price was right—Red Notice became the streaming platform’s most-watched movie in its first weekend of all time.
As it currently remains in Netflix’s coveted number one spot, Red Notice’s success will no doubt be an incentive for the film and television giant to sign off on a sequel.
To add, the film’s producer Dany Garcia told Variety that a follow up film was definitely on the table.
“What we have planned is to let’s see how this goes. I think there is… it’s almost like ‘franchise’ is just part of our conversation. But we’re also smart enough to say, ‘Let’s see how everything goes.'”
What will happen in Red Notice 2?
At the end of the first film, we encounter a big twist where Hartley reveals he’s actually not the FBI agent he’d pretended to be. Instead, he’s The Bishop’s longtime partner and the pair betray Booth by giving the recovered eggs to their client before calling the cops on him.
But as it turns out, Booth isn’t one to be messed around. He ambushes the sneaky couple when they attempt to escape on a yacht, and in the final scene, Booth proposes a new challenge to his former allies—a “three-thief job” promising “double the payout”.
As the movie ends, the trio are seen in Paris, presumably where their next job awaits.
This appears to set the scene for the sequel. The Louvre Museum is in the background of the final shot, which means their next heist could involve more art and priceless antiques.
When will Red Notice 2 be released?
Given the film has yet to be given the green light, it’s likely the sequel won’t be released for at least a year if traditional filming timelines are anything to go by.
That said, the actors are definitely keen to get back behind the camera—Gadot previously told Today that she “hopes” to start working on a second film ASAP.
While we await the (hopefully) inevitable sequel news, you can watch Red Notice on Netflix here.
