Netflix’s ‘The Devil All The Time’ Is Like A Dark And Twisted Version Of ‘Sweet Magnolias’

Australian actors Mia Wasikowska and Eliza Scanlen are part of a star-studded cast

While the wholesome small town charms of Sweet Magnolias had us hosting virtual margarita dates over Zoom, it looks like Netflix has another small town story in store—but with a much darker plot.

Created by Antonio Campos, Netflix’s The Devil All The Time is an interpretation of Donald Ray Pollock’s award-winning 2011 novel. Set between different timelines, the plot spans the events of World War II up to the stirrings of the American involvement in the Vietnam War—and includes many shadowy characters.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Campos explained why he chose the project. “I’m a big fan of southern gothic and noir and this was a perfect marriage of the two,” he admitted.

Arvin’s search for the truth leads him down a dark road, forcing him to cross paths with Knockemstiff’s most dangerous residents: a murderous couple, a law-bending sheriff, and a scamming pastor in a powder blue suit.
