Unbelievable is a close television adaptation of a 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning article called ‘An Unbelievable Story of Rape’, which was written by journalists T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong for American investigative site ProPublica about a rape case involving a teenager.
The TV series, Unbelievable, begins with Marie’s story of being raped, reporting it, being made to say she lied about the whole thing, and having to live a lonely life clouded with public shame as a result.
The next part of the story follows two detective in Denver, Colorado - Grace Rasmussen played by Toni Collette and Karen Duvall played by Merrit Weaver - who are investigating similar rape attacks three years later that eventually lead them to Marie’s case.
Now, we’ll just leave it at that because we don’t want to spoil too much for you, especially since the series is out now on Netflix and we highly recommend watching it ASAP, but we will say you should definitely make time to read the article about the real case afterward. It's compelling, upsetting, and sadly all true.
