Natasha Richardson was an acclaimed British actress and humanitarian, known not just for her memorable screen presence, but also for her deeply moving real-life love story with Liam Neeson. Although she tragically passed away in 2009, her memory – and bond she shared with Neeson – continues to stir public fascination to this day.
The Naked Gun actor and The Parent Trap actress met in 1993 on the set of a Broadway production, and married a year later in 1994 before welcoming two children together.
After the tragic loss of his wife, Neeson remained (at least publicly) single, choosing to throw himself into work as a way to deal with the grief. Which is why, in 2025, his burgeoning relationship with Pamela Anderson is garnering so much attention. While many were surprised to hear of the unlikely romance between the two co-stars, there are those close to him that have drawn comparisons between Anderson and Richardson.
Andy Cohen, who said as much in a recent interview, spoke of his friendship with Natasha Richardson, revealing that he believed Anderson was “just like her”.
“She is an independent woman just like Tash was. She loves to cook. She has her own thing going on. She has two boys,” he added before addressing the partnership with a nod of approval. “I and all of the friends in his circle are very much stanning whatever this is. Shipping.”
In light of the welcome news, we take a look back at the beautiful love story that was Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson. From their early days as a couple, to navigating life after tragedy and her legacy beyond, here’s everything to know.
How Did Liam Neeson And Natasha Richardson Meet?

Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson first met in 1992 when they began working on their Broadway play Anna Christie, which debuted in January 1993.
Starring alongside each other, the co-stars’ chemistry was undeniable with the Los Angeles Times calling their performance “a revelation” and reviews leading to an extended season run.
Off stage, a then-29-year-old Richardson was married to prominent British theatre producer, Robert Fox. Neeson, then 40, had enjoyed several high-profile relationships including a four year run with Helen Mirren. At the time, Neeson had just come out of a brief but passionate affair with actress Brooke Shields, who he famously proposed to just months before production began on Anna Christie.
Perhaps fortuitously, Shields shut down the proposal, recalling the moment in a 2014 interview with People. “I said, ‘No, no, no, because knowing you, you’ll probably fall in love with your next leading lady and marry her, so I’m leaving myself out of this.’ And I was dead right.”
Richardson divorced her husband shortly after the show wrapped, allowing her to explore the complicated feelings she was having for Neeson. “Working with him, what happened between us, and that becoming public knowledge in conjunction with my marriage falling apart, was kind of bad timing,” she told the Daily News in a 2009 that was published after her passing. “So what can I say? Obviously I fell very much in love with him.”
The feeling, on Neeson’s part, was undeniably mutual, telling Anderson Cooper in a 2014 interview with 60 Minutes that he’d “never had that kind of an explosive chemistry situation with an actor or actress.”
The pair tried their best to remain platonic, until a birthday card send to Richardson from Neeson prompted her to question the nature of their relationship. “This is like a letter from a buddy, What is our relationship?” she asked Neeson, who realised then and there what her reaction meant to him. “That was when I knew I really loved this person,” he told New York Daily News at the time.
When Did Liam Neeson & Natasha Richardson Get Married?

Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson were married in July 1994 in a private ceremony in Upstate New York which included family and industry friends such as Steven Spielberg and Emma Thompson.
During the ceremony, Richardson surprised Neeson with an impromptu rendition of Van Morrison’s Crazy Love – a performance she’d been practicing for in secret for months.
“Behind my back, Natasha had been taking singing lessons to sing it to me,” Neeson shared in a 2016 interview with SiriusXM Radio. “After the ceremony, we were all going out to start the night’s festivities, and she grabbed the microphone and she sang me this. She had learned it, and I was like, ‘Wow!'”
Their marriage lasted 15 years and was widely regarded as one of the most genuine partnerships in Hollywood for its rare blend of mutual respect, artistic admiration and undeniable chemistry.
What Happened To Natasha Richardson?

In March 2009, Natasha Richardson suffered a head injury while taking a beginner ski lesson at Mont Tremblant in Quebec. While her injury seemed minor at first, it soon became life threatening and Richardson was evacuated to a Montreal hospital.
By the time Neeson arrived from his film set in Toronto, it was too late. In 2014, Neeson opened up about his late wife’s unexpected death to Anderson Cooper, explaining that doctors informed him that the accident had left her clinically brain dead.
“She was on life support… I went in to her and I told her I loved her. I said, ‘Sweetie, you’re not coming back from this, you’ve banged your head,’” he recalled.
“She and I had made a pact, if any of us got into a vegetative state that we’d pull the plug. That was my immediate thought, ‘Okay, these tubes have to go. She’s gone.’” he continued before admitting that in the aftermath of her death, he threw himself straight back into work as a way to cope with the grief.
She passed away at the age of 45 leaving behind Neeson and their two sons, Micheál and Daniel, who were three and two at the time.
Did Liam Neeson Ever Remarry?

No, although Neeson has been linked to a a few women over the years – including, most recently Pamela Anderson – he has never remarried.
In several interviews he has admitted that the grief of losing her has never really left him. “There’s periods now in our New York residence when I hear the door opening. Especially the first couple of years, she would always drop the keys … on the table, say, ‘Hello?'” he revealed in a 60 Minutes interview.
“Grief’s like — it hits you. It’s like a wave,” Neeson added. “You just get this profound feeling of instability. You feel like a three-legged table. Just suddenly … the Earth isn’t stable anymore. And then it passes and becomes more infrequent, but I still get it sometimes.”
In 2020, he told Inquier.net that he still speaks to Richardson every day.
“I speak to her every day at her grave, which is about a mile and a half down the road. I go down there quite often, so I do speak to her as if she’s here. Not that she answers me.”
