Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have officially tied the knot. The couple married on July 3 in front of a star-studded guest list that included celebrities, athletes, business moguls, friends and family.

But among all the wedding details, one revelation caught everyone by surprise: the person who officiated what many are calling America’s ‘royal wedding’.

According to a statement released by Swift’s representative, it was none other than Adam Sandler.

“Taylor & Travis did not have bridesmaids or groomsmen. Instead, her brother Austin Swift served as Taylor’s Man of Honor and Jason Kelce was Travis’ Best Man. The ceremony joined both families together and was officiated by friend Adam Sandler.”

At first glance, the pairing might seem unexpected. So, how exactly did Adam Sandler become close enough to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce to officiate their wedding? Let’s unpack their surprisingly long-standing connection.

What Is The Relationship Between Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce & Adam Sandler?

Sandler’s connection to the couple runs deeper than many fans might realise. The actor, who was described as a “friend” in the official wedding statement, starred alongside Kelce in the 2025 film Happy Gilmore 2, helping forge a friendship well before the couple’s big day.

He’s also been open about his admiration for Swift over the years. After attending the Los Angeles premiere of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film with his daughters, Sunny and Sadie, in 2023, Sandler admitted a few months later that Swift is one of the few celebrities who leaves him starstruck.

“You know what, Taylor Swift, because what she means to my kids, I get a little jumpy. Just ’cause I don’t wanna blow it for my kids,” Sandler said on an episode of SiriusXM’s Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend in February 2024. “So I’m a little like, ‘Taylor, Taylor,’ like I talk a little too loud or something. I don’t stay as cool as I can.”

He added of Swift’s music: “There’s not a word my kids don’t know. I know them too, by the way. But they know them inside and out.”

The affection clearly runs deep. Speaking to Billboard in September 2024, Sandler revealed that one of Swift’s songs holds a particularly special place in his family’s heart.

“Everything [my two daughters] throw on I love, but one of the first ones they threw on when they were young was ‘The Best Day,’ ” he said. “We connected with that when the kids were young. Every album, we listen the first day it comes out. There’s not a song they don’t know every word to.”

His relationship with Kelce also continued to grow through Happy Gilmore 2. At the film’s New York premiere in July 2025, Sandler explained how the NFL star came to join the cast.

“[My daughters] love Taylor, I love Taylor. Travis is just nice enough. He wanted to do something, so we wrote something for Travis. And when he said yes, my girls were very excited, including my wife. Everybody loves him,” Sandler told Extra.

Kelce wasn’t the only high-profile cameo. Bad Bunny also appeared in the film, and Sandler later couldn’t stop gushing about both stars.

“Travis and Bunny are ridiculous in it,” adding, “can’t believe they’re my buddies now.”

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight Sandler couldn’t speak more highly of Kelce.

“Travis is such a gentle, nice guy, and funny as hell. He’s like the guys I grew up with. When I was with Travis, it reminded me of my buddies in high school and just being able to laugh and say the things you want to say.”

Reiterating that Kelce is “a stud,” Sandler added that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end is “a great actor and a great human.”

While Sandler is Jewish, his role as officiant does not necessarily indicate the ceremony was a Jewish wedding. In many jurisdictions, friends can legally officiate weddings after becoming ordained or authorised, regardless of the couple’s religion.

Safe to say, we’re fully on board with this friendship. It turns out Sandler may have been the perfect person to officiate the ceremony after all.
