Congratulations are in order for F1 driver George Russell and his longtime girlfriend, Carmen Montero Mundt, who are now on the fast track to marriage.
The couple announced their engagement today on Instagram in a series of idyllic images framed by a lush tropical coastline, offering a glimpse of the private, romantic proposal. Spanish-born financier and entrepreneur Carmen unveiled a spectacular natural oval yellow diamond on her left hand, while George appeared behind her in the intimate tableau he had created for his bride-to-be.
Arissa Michos, Marketing and Brand Director at Class A Jewellers, estimates the ring to be between eight and 10 carats, with a potential value of upwards of $1 million.
“Yellow diamonds are rarer and are graded on a different scale based on the intensity of the yellow colour,” she explains. “This looks like a Fancy Vivid Yellow, as it’s a very rich colour. Yellow diamonds are more expensive because they are rarer than white diamonds. Depending on the intensity of the colour, they become rarer and therefore more expensive.”

The ring itself is an elegant trilogy design, with two white step-cut trilliant diamonds flanking the oval yellow centre stone. The restrained arrangement serves to heighten the extraordinary saturation of the central diamond, allowing its golden hue to take centre stage.
The setting for the proposal was every bit as romantic. Candles were dotted among the rocks, interspersed with clusters of white flowers, while an intimate dining table had been arranged for two overlooking the sea. For the occasion, Carmen wore a white Cult Gaia dress, its delicate floral detailing tracing the straps at the back.
How Did George Russell & Carmen Montero Mundt Meet?
It is a fittingly cinematic beginning to the next chapter of a relationship that has unfolded alongside one of the most closely watched careers in modern Formula One.
Russell and Montero Mundt first met in London in 2020 through a mutual friend, when they were both 22 years old. Carmen, who moved to the city at 18, was persuaded by her Spanish friend to join her for a drink at Soho House in White City, where she would meet her date, and his housemate, who happened to be a third wheel for the evening.
Speaking to Tatler, she recalled: “It was a Sunday night, and my friend was like, ‘I’m dating this guy and he wants to bring his flatmate for a drink. Would you mind coming with us? Because I think it’s a little bit awkward…’ I thought he was really funny.”
Afterwards, George asked Carmen’s friend for her number and invited her to his home in White City, where he offered to cook for her. “It’s quite refreshing that someone invites you over to cook for you,” Carmen told Tatler. “I was quite surprised.”
Carmen was then in her final year at Westminster, completing her dissertation while beginning her professional life. George, meanwhile, was at the beginning of his second season in Formula One, driving for Williams.
“I wasn’t going into details and I wasn’t asking many questions,” she recalled. “To be fair, I was never into Formula One.”
She continued, “I’ve almost seen his entire career in F1. We grew together as a couple […] It’s really lucky that we met when we did, because we settled into our life in a really smooth way.”
In recent years, Formula One has transcended its traditional sporting audience to become a formidable force in popular culture. Netflix’s behind-the-scenes series Drive to Survive has played a significant role in bringing the sport to a new generation of fans, while F1: The Movie further cemented its place in the cultural zeitgeist, becoming Brad Pitt’s highest-grossing film to date.
With races now more accessible across streaming platforms and social media, F1 drivers and their partners (or WAG’s) have emerged as some of the most closely followed figures at the intersection of sport, fashion and celebrity.
Fans were quick to flood the comments with congratulations for George and Carmen, while the ring itself commanded almost as much attention as the happy couple. Its rare yellow diamond arrives at an interesting moment for the coloured-stone engagement ring, which has enjoyed renewed favour among a new generation of brides. The growing availability of lab-grown diamonds has also made the aesthetic of exceptionally rare and coloured stones more attainable.
