Stella Parton, Dolly Parton’s younger sister, has revealed that many of the singer’s relatives were unaware she was battling cancer before her death.

In an interview with CBS Mornings, Stella explained that the legendary country singer “could not bear negative things” and chose to keep the details of her declining health private from much of the family.

Dolly tragically died on August 25 at age 80 in Nashville. Endowed with a rare combination of wit, creativity, humility and kindness, she was widely regarded as a unifying figure who transcended generations, reaching a level of celebrity few artists ever achieve.

It feels fitting, then, that even as her own health declined, Dolly remained focused on the people around her.

“She did not want people sad,” Stella said.

“She would not have wanted her fans worried about it. She didn’t want a lot of the family worried about it. Some of us knew, the ones of us that were closer. Not every relative.”

Stella said Dolly would have been touched by the outpouring of love following her death, knowing it would bring comfort to those closest to her.

“She’d be really happy and delighted that people have shown her so much love. Because she knew that would help us feel better, as her family.”

Concerns about Dolly’s health first emerged last year, when she postponed a Las Vegas residency. Around the same time, her sister Frieda Parton shared on Facebook that she had been “up all night praying for my sister, Dolly.” Frieda later deleted the post amid mounting concern from fans, but speculation over Dolly’s health continued to swell.

Dolly ultimately addressed the rumours herself on social media, writing, “I ain’t dead yet.” In May 2026, she cancelled the residency altogether, but said she was responding well to treatment and improving every day.

Throughout her career, Dolly built a reputation not only as one of country music’s most beloved performers, but also as a figure whose selflessness and generosity extended far beyond the confines of music. She was a prolific philanthropist, capitalising on her fame and wealth to support causes ranging from childhood literacy and education to medical research, disaster relief and beyond.
