Teenager Admits Trying To Poison Niece’s Breastmilk With Pain Pills

She has pleaded guilty to attempted murder

An American woman accused of poisoning her brother’s baby with painkillers has pleaded guilty to attempted murder.

Indiana 19-year-old Sarai Rodriguez-Miranda fulfilled the terms of a plea deal by admitting in court on Monday that she tried to poison her 11-week-old niece with milk laced with crushed up pills, the New York Post reports.

“I poisoned a bottle with a lethal dose of acetaminophen,” she reportedly said during her hearing.

Authorities say Ms Rodriguez-Miranda was on the run for about eight months before she was arrested.

Court officials previously told PEOPLE that before the poisoning attempt, Ms Rodriguez-Miranda had become upset by the fact her brother, his baby and fiancé were staying in her mother’s house.

“I’m gonna crush up some of these pills since she decided they can stay longer and kill their baby,” Ms Rodriguez-Miranda allegedly said in a text message on a phone shared with her mother.

According to court officials, the teenager’s mother saw the text messages and then checked on two bottles of breast milk in their refridgerator. She saw a powdery residue at the bottom of one and discoloured milk.

The baby was examined by doctors, who found she had not been poisoned.

Ms Rodriguez-Miranda, who will be sentenced on May 18, could serve up to 25 years in jail.
