Before the new season was announced, Laurie Nunn, the show's creator and writer, revealed that she had already begun working on the next chapter. "I've started writing series three, but that's just a very normal part of the process because we work on such tight schedule, and season three hasn't been greenlit yet or officially commissioned," she told LadBible.
"It was a wonderful surprise, but I really didn't see it coming. In a lot of ways, I just feel like I live in that teenage world."
"I think I could do some more with them if we're given the chance. [Netflix] is very supportive and really wanting us to tell the stories that we feel passionate about. It really feels like we're all on the same page, wanting to make the same show," Nunn also told The Hollywood Reporter. "I love writing these characters," she added. "It's such a big ensemble and I think the theme of the show – in terms of it being about sex and relationships – it really just offers up endless story opportunities.
Asa Butterfield, who plays Otis, also spoke to iD about the series success.
"I knew after season one that we had something good. I was confident after we'd wrapped shooting that it could do really well, and that people would talk about it, because the topics that it raises are quite revolutionary in some ways. But I didn't expect the overwhelmingly positive, global response."
Which cast members will return?
The above announcement saw some familiar faces, so its safe to assume that most original cast members will return. That includes Otis (Asa Butterfield), Jean (Gillian Anderson), Maeve (Emma Mackey), Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood), Adam (Connor Swindells), Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling), Ola (Patricia Allison), Lily (Tanya Reynolds), Headmaster Groff (Alistair Petrie), and Ncuti Gatwa as Eric, who was recently nominated for a BAFTA in the Best Male Performance in a Comedy series category.
When will it air?
No word yet on when we can expect season three, but both season one and season two aired in January so we can predict January 2021 for the next chapter.
