Lip Love

Start fresh: “Always start with exfoliated and hydrated lips,” says Chanel makeup artist Victoria Baron.

Take cues from past eras: For a 1920s twist, Baron suggests slightly overlining the Cupid’s bow and centre of the bottom lip, then connecting the lines by underlining to the outer corners of the mouth. “This creates the subtle illusion that the centre of the mouth has more volume,” says Baron.

Make it bold: “Fill in the lip with your chosen red lipstick,” says Baron. “Blot gently with a tissue then apply another layer to the centre of the lips for bolder colour.”

Slick it back: The wet-hair look can be an easy way to party mode. Use a styling gel or hair oil to get a sleek look, then work it into a sleek bun or pulled-back style.

Add volume: “Grab your dry texture spray or dry shampoo and give your roots a good going over before massaging in; it’s a no-brainer,” says celebrity hair stylist Anthony Nader. “Where you want extra volume, give the root area a tease by backcombing with your flat paddle brush. Gently push down on the root area with your bristles, then smooth over the top surface to hide the backcombing. Then you’re ready to go.”

Instant shine: “Adding extra shine can be tricky, especially if your hair strands are on the finer side or even oily,” warns Nader. He has two tips he swears by:

  • Cool dry: “Set your hair dryer on the coldest temperature you have, with your narrow nozzle attached, and smooth over your hair with a large round brush of boar bristles. The combo of cool air flowing down the hair strands and the bristles will help redirect dull strands, close the cuticle and impart more sheen.”
  • Steer clear of your roots: “Apply a lightweight spray serum or oil on the mid-lengths and ends only,” says Nader. “If you’re in doubt, spray lightly into your palms and then apply work through your hair hair. It gives give more control on where you want the extra shine.”

Add a Bend: “You may think sectioning seems like a waste of time, but you’re making your hair styling much easier and organised when you do,” says Nader. He advises taking three sections from ear to ear, clipping them then curling in small sections, starting at the bottom. “Use a wide flat iron for a soft bend or wave, or an original size flat iron for tighter waves. Wind your sections away from your face to create a beautiful shape,” says Nader.

Humidity-proof your hair: A protective spray in the morning will keep hair looking polished well into your big night out. “The thing people do wrong is not drenching the hair; you need to get it wet with product then blow-dry it in,” says celebrity stylist Chris Appleton.

And if you colour your hair, “Condition, condition, condition,” says celebrity hair colourist Simon Bright. “The lightening process can be taxing on your tresses so invest in a deep-conditioning treatment or mask. Healthy hair not only looks better but also holds colour longer.

When You Have 5 Minutes

This time of year can get hectic. If you’ve come directly from the office or the school pick-up and have only a moment to spare, a red lip will give instant party vibes.

Find Your Signature Red: Serrat’s red lip is adored across the globe. Chic and speedy, it’s the perfect look to fall back on for instant polish. “It’s my signature look,” she says. “It really adds warmth to the face.” Here are Serrat’s tips to get it right every time.

Know Your Lips: “I know my lips well so I can do my lipstick in a taxi on my way out,” says Serrat. Get to know your lips by practising applying lipstick when you’re not in a rush so you can nail it when you are.

Mark It Out: “Create a V first on your Cupid’s bow,” says Serrat. “I also like to take the line up a bit above my lip line. Then I go from the outside corner of my mouth and draw the line to meet the top of my V, which gives me my shape. Then I add the bottom line and colour the corners.” Serrat then uses her finger to “stretch to the formula” in the center to cover the lips..

Make It Subtle: “It’s called bouche mordue, which means just bitten lips,” says Serrat. “We add a little bit of lipstick then blot it with a tissue to give a matte soft flush.”
