Whether your personal obsession arrived in the form of a 12-step routine or a glass-skin fixation, Korean beauty transformed the way we treat our faces. It turned skincare into a ritual, a hobby and, for some of us, a full-blown personality trait. Because it wasn’t simply about connecting with our complexions or amassing a collection of beautiful topicals for the sake of a shelf shot. The ‘secrets’ of Korean skincare weren’t just clever marketing—they worked.
Now, our fascination with K-beauty is moving from skin to hair. Mina Joung, Korean hair stylist at Melbourne’s AFEAT Salon, isn’t surprised. “People have already experienced how considered and innovative Korean skincare can be, so I think it’s very natural that the interest is now moving into hair and scalp care.” But Korean haircare isn’t simply skincare by another name. It brings a more holistic way of approaching hair: putting the scalp and the science before the styling, and in turn, giving every style a more polished finish.
So how can we create said finish for ourselves? By leaning into the same approach. Here are 5 lessons we can learn from Korean haircare (and the scrubs, tonics and tools that could help you lock in your shiniest hair yet)…
#1: Shine Enhances Every Style
While trends evolve, one thing remains constant across all continents: shine is a visible marker of hair health.
“In Korea, it’s not only about creating a beautiful hairstyle. There is a lot of emphasis on the hair itself looking soft, healthy, glossy and well maintained,” Joung explains. “With the influence of K-pop, K-dramas and Korean fashion, clients are now interested not only in Korean layers, soft curls and natural volume, but also in how to achieve the healthy, polished hair that completes those looks.”
#2: Prevention Is Easier Than Repair
As with Korean skincare, the philosophy is to stay ahead of the problem rather than wait for one to appear. “One of the biggest differences is that Korean haircare tends to focus on consistent maintenance and prevention, rather than waiting until the hair becomes extremely damaged and then trying to repair it,” says Joung.

#3: Maintaining Balance Is Key
The desired finish is simple: healthy-looking hair that still feels light and effortless. “People want hydration, softness and shine, but without making the hair feel heavy or oily. That balance is very important,” Joung notes.
“It starts with choosing a shampoo that suits your scalp type and cleansing properly without over-stripping the skin. If there is significant oil, buildup or styling-product residue, an occasional scalp exfoliation or scrub can also be useful,” Joung clarifies.
And if your hair already shows signs of damage, targeted care still has a place. “For damaged hair, I tend to look for a good balance of protein, amino acids, hydration, oils and conditioning ingredients rather than focusing on only one ingredient,” she shares. What that balance looks like, however, depends on the hair in question. “Hair thickness, porosity, level of damage, colour history and scalp condition all influence which treatment is going to work best.”
#4: Scalp Care Goes Beyond Just A Scrub
In Korean haircare, healthy-looking hair starts where it grows: the scalp. We exfoliate, hydrate and treat the skin on our faces, yet the skin a few centimetres higher has traditionally been lucky to get a thorough shampoo. Scalp care has already made its way into Australian bathrooms, but the Korean approach goes beyond adding a scrub to the rotation every few washes.
The distinction is in how specifically that care is applied. “Scalp exfoliation, scalp tonics, ampoules and scalp massage are relatively familiar concepts in Korea,” says Joung. “The scalp, roots, mid-lengths and ends can all have different needs, so rather than expecting one product to do everything, Korean haircare tends to be more targeted and layered.”
And sometimes, scalp care is as much about what you do as what you apply. “I also think something very simple — properly drying the scalp after washing rather than leaving it damp for a long period—is an important part of scalp care,” says Joung.
#5: The Cooling Sensation Means It’s Working
As Korean haircare finds a growing audience in Australia, Joung says the reactions to the products (and the sensations that they cause) has been rather different. For example, some Korean scalp-care products deliver a pronounced cooling or tingling effect—a cue Korean clients may associate with feeling refreshed and deeply cleansed. For Australian clients, it can be more confronting. “I’ve had some Australian clients experience a strong cooling sensation and ask whether the product is chemically exfoliating or stripping the scalp because the sensation feels quite intense to them,” Joung explains. It may be an adjustment, but if you can learn to live with a bit of a tingling sensation, fresh, glossy hair may well be on the other side.
