She’s just won an Oscar, but Emma Stone was kicking major beauty goals long before she shimmied her way centre stage in that glittering gold Givenchy number.
She has pro make-up artist and NARS director Rachel Goodwin to thank for her always on point beauty looks, and while we can’t all have Goodwin on speed dial, we can steal all her expert tips.
When it comes to photo-friendly, long-lasting make-up, “Less is always more,” Goodwin maintains. “I make sure to use soft matte formulas on red carpet days to avoid the need for lots of extra powder,” she says. “I use loose powder in the centre of the face only and add a lightweight highlighter on the tops of the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and Cupid’s bow for a soft, glowing effect.”
Her top tip? “I also love to buff make-up with a beauty blender sponge doused in some rosewater or SK-II toner. It takes off any extra build-up, leaving behind a sheer application that looks as amazing in real life as it does in photos.”
Below, Goodwin talks us through her five favourite looks from Emma’s La La Land press tour, culminating in her glowing Oscars appearance.
1. Venice Film Festival
“I think I would have to say the Venice Film festival because it was the very first premiere of the film and it was such a special night. The whole look was just so luminous and fun and I think it really set the tone for this whole journey.”
2. The LA premiere of La La Land
“The premiere in LA was another magical moment, I used a mixture of purple and pale blue. I think that look will always be one of my favorite make up moments we’ve ever had.”
3. The Golden Globes
“The Golden Globes was such a moment! She looked like an ethereal goddess!! I loved how feminine and soft the whole look was. I dabbed a little bit of silver glitter on her lids before she walked out and it just tied the whole thing together I couldn’t help being inspired by all the embroidered stars on her dress.”
4. The AFI Awards
“The AFI awards was another favorite look. I created two tone cat eyes using a deep teal shade on top and a bronze shadow on the bottom. It felt both dramatic and elegant at the same time.”
5. The Oscars
“Emma’s look was all about 1930s Hollywood Glamour – her make-up was inspired by the romantic paintings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. I used NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint, Orgasm Liquid Blush [not yet available; try Orgasm Blush] and Audacious Lipstick in Mona.”
