You Can’t Take Chanel Out Of The Girl: Margot Robbie At The 2026 Met Gala

Margot Robbie has just ascended the steps of the Met for this year’s Met Gala, offering a study in opulence and an interpretation of “Fashion Is Art.”

Returning to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the first time since 2023, she once again aligned herself with Chanel. The partnership, of course, is a longstanding one.

Her gold lamé gown, strapless and sculptural, unfurled into a petal-lined train and shimmered with a molten luminosity. Its apparent simplicity allowed the intricacy of its construction to come into sharper focus. According to Vogue, the piece required 761 hours of work and incorporated close to 1,100 embroidered elements, underscoring the garment as artefact as much as adornment.

While Robbie’s gown embraced minimalism, her jewellery offered a richer, more ornate counterpoint. The actor wore yellow sapphires, spessartite garnets and diamonds set across white and yellow gold, with the Golden Sillage earrings proving the standout. Featuring two pear-cut yellow sapphires, the earrings subtly referenced the radiating, almost atmospheric quality associated with Chanel N°5.

She paired them with the Golden Braid ring, whose rope-like detailing nodded to Gabrielle Chanel’s fascination with sailing, alongside the Lion Emblématique ring, inspired by the lion motifs that appear throughout Venice, a symbol Chanel repeatedly returned to throughout her life and work.

Her beauty look followed the same refined sensibility: a sleek updo with wispy side fringe, luminous skin and a deep, sun-warmed glow that allowed the jewellery to remain the focal point.

Yet to read the simplicity of the look in isolation would be to overlook the broader narrative Robbie has been quietly constructing. In recent years, she has emerged as one of fashion’s most disciplined practitioners of method dressing, working in close collaboration with stylist Andrew Mukamal to extend character beyond the screen and onto the red carpet.

If the 2023 Barbie press tour saw her move through a lexicon of archival references and hyper-feminine codes, her most recent promotional circuit for Wuthering Heights signalled a darker, more gothic turn.

Drawing on Victorian silhouettes, Baroque excess and literary symbolism, Robbie’s off-screen wardrobe has become a kind of visual exegesis. Corsetry, mourning jewellery and antique references are reframed through a contemporary lens. It is a mode of dressing that privileges narrative coherence over novelty, where each look operates as a continuation rather than a departure.

Seen through this lens, her Met Gala appearance reads as both departure and anchor. While her Chanel gown resists the overt theatricality of her recent press tour wardrobe, it retains the same commitment to intention. The sculptural finish, the meticulous handwork and the almost archival sensibility all echo a broader fascination with fashion as object and artefact.

Where others approached the theme through transformation, Margot offered something more distilled. A reminder that fashion, at its most articulate, need not shout to be understood.
