Fashion Maverick Virgil Abloh Has Tragically Died Age 41

The designer was privately battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Virgil Abloh, artistic director of Louis Vuitton Menswear and Off-White founder, has tragically passed away following a private battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. He was 41.

Taking to social media, representatives of Abloh announced the news, revealing details of his illness to the public for the first time.

The statement reads:

“For over two years, Virgil valiantly battled a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma.

“He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture.

“Through it all, his work ethic, infinite curiosity, and optimism never wavered. Virgil was driven by his dedication to his craft and to his mission to open doors for others and create pathways for greater equality in art and design. He often said, “Everything I do is for the 17-year-old version of myself,” believing deeply in the power of art to inspire future generations.”

Many of Abloh’s contemporaries, peers and celebrity fans have since taken to their own Instagram accounts to grieve the designer and share their condolences.

Kim Jones, creative director of Dior Homme and Fendi, shared a touching tribute, writing that it was “so sad to hear about the passing of dear Virgil, one of the kindest people you could meet”.

Abloh is survived by his wife Shannon and two children Lowe and Grey.

Truly one of our generation’s greatest creative minds, his legacy includes coveted collections, numerous accolades and art exhibitions.

However, we will remember him most for his tireless activism and support for emerging creatives.

While LVMH’s CEO, Bernard Arnault, has made a statement on his passing, there is no further news as of yet as to what will happen to the now unoccupied roles at the legacy label.

Our thoughts are with Abloh’s family and friends during this trying time.
