Tina Fey’s New Musical Comedy Follows A ’90s Girl Group’s Hilarious Final Shot At Fame

Girls5eva is a girl gang we'd happily join.

Taylor Swift may have garnered a reputation as having the most enviable girl gang in the world, but admittedly we’ve long been wishing to third wheel in the friendship of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler—and now, we might actually get the chance. Well, sort of.

Fey’s latest television project is something of a nostalgia hit, following a ’90s girl group, Girls5eva, who decide to reunite for their last shot at fame. And if the first look is anything to go by, it’s going to make you want to jam out with your four best mates.

Meredith Scardino is the creator behind the hilarious new musical comedy, with Fey having signed on to executive produce alongside Robert Carlock, Jeff Richmond, David Miner, Eric Gurian.

Intrigued? We’ve rounded up everything to know about Girls5eva below.

What Is Girls5eva About?

The upcoming musical comedy, set to premiere on Stan later this year, follows a one-hit-wonder girl group from the ’90s that reunite to give their pop star dreams one more shot.

“When a one-hit-wonder girl group from the ’90s gets sampled by a young rapper, its members reunite to give their pop star dreams one more shot,” its official description reads. “They may be grown women balancing spouses, kids, jobs, debt, aging parents, and shoulder pain, but can‘t they also be Girls5eva?”

Who Has Been Cast In Girls5eva?

Obviously, it wouldn’t be a Fey production without an incredible lineup of female talent taking the lead.

Busy Philipps (Cougar Town) will star alongside Grammy Award-winning actress Sara Bareilles (Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert) along with Grammy and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton), as well as Paula Pell, best known for her work on Saturday Night Live.

Bareilles takes on the role of Dawn, described as a “former member of Girls5eva, who is now a bit restless in life managing her family’s small Italian restaurant in Queens.” Phillips, Goldsberry, and Pell star as characters Summer, Wickie, and Gloria, respectively.

Has A Girls5eva Trailer Been Released?

Yes, we have officially been given our first look at the upcoming comedy series, with a trailer showing the characters explaining why “forever is too short” and being suddenly reunited after booking a gig 20 years after they split.

The lyrical genius we’re introduced to includes: Gonna be famous 5eva, ’cause 4ever’s too short (too short) / Gonna be famous 3gether, ’cause that’s one more than 2gether / So what are you waiting 5? Girls5eva.”
