It turns out you need to do at least one hour of exercise per day to offset the deadly risks that come with sitting for 8 hours at a desk-job.
New research from The University of Cambridge has taken into account over 20 years of data worldwide with surprising results. With the results showing that those who sat down for eight hours a day (which is most of us) are 59% more at risk of developing chronic disease (type-2 diabetes, heart disease, strokes and cancer) and an earlier death.
But do not fear, the risk was entirely eliminated if they managed to get between 60-75 minutes of exercise per day. Thankfully, the term exercise was defined VERY loosely; those managing a brisk walk had the same outcome as those with an intense regime.
“We cannot stress enough the importance of getting exercise, whether it’s getting out for a walk at lunchtime, going for a run in the morning or cycling to work,” Professor ulf ekelund, norwegian school of sports sciences.
Think you are off the hook because you don’t spend that long sitting down? Think again. The study found that those who sat for 8 hours a day but were physically active were better off than those who sat for less but weren’t physically active.
If time is an issue why not break it down… that is just 30 mins before and after work.
