Undisputedly one of the fashion sphere’s most famous items, the Regency-era accessory is deep rooted in cinematic history with Marilyn Monroe’s love affair with the above-the-elbow glove well-documented.

Though for some, it’s not her bubblegum pink Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ensemble which first springs to mind.

Fellow muse, Audrey Hepburn, is also to thank for bringing opera gloves into mainstream media with her Givenchy get-up from 1961 hit Breakfast At Tiffany’s earning a spot in big screen history.

Thousands of miles away from the camera flashes of Tinseltown, the likes of Princess Margaret and Princess Diana carried the fashion torch at film premieres and diplomatic receptions across the world.

Fast-forward to present-day and famous faces have yet to turn their backs on the beloved accessory with Rihanna held responsible for bringing them back at the 2019 British Fashion Awards.

Her own greatest ambassador, the songstress graced the red carpet in head-to-toe Fenty with a pair of peppermint green gloves (sheer enough to showcase her sparkly jewellery beneath) to finish.

Proof that the trend even resonates with the retro-obsessed millennial set, Ariana Grande was next to trial the trend (a grand total of three times, of course) at the 2020 Grammy Awards

Further demonstrating the sartorial trickle-down effect, Margot Robbie soon followed suit at the London premiere of Birds Of Prey in a suitably feathered Dries Van Noten ensemble paired with shocking pink gloves pulled high over her elbows.

From Zoë Kravitz to Blake Lively, see which celebrities have brought back opera gloves on the red carpet so far this year.
