We Finally Know Who Harry And Meghan Chose To Be Archie’s Godparents

The couple famously eschewed tradition by keeping their decision private

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue to reign the headlines in recent weeks courtesy of their decision to “step back” from their duties.

So the long-awaited confirmation of their chosen godparents for 8-month-old son Archie almost slipped our royal radar.

According to the Sunday Times, the Sussexes decided to give Prince Harry and Prince William’s childhood nanny, Tiggy Pettifer née Legge-Bourke, the prestigious role.

Former equerry to Prince Charles and close friend of the royal brothers, Mark Dyer, has also reportedly been tasked with the job.

“They were both constants in Harry’s childhood and beyond,” a source told E! News. “They are fascinating choices of figures in Harry’s life that he will hope may keep Archie rooted somehow in the UK, as they relocate to North America.”

But it’s likely these aren’t the only two people given the honour, as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, have a grand total of 18 godparents between them.

Though we may never learn who else Harry and Meghan chose, as the couple declined to name their chosen godparents at the time of their son’s christening on July 6, 2019 for privacy reasons – a move which sparked public backlash.

In another buck from tradition, the couple also decided not to allow the media to cover guests’ arrivals at the Windsor Castle ceremony and instead chose to release official portraits following the big day.

The couple did however make sure that Archie was baptised in the handmade replica of the royal christening gown which has been worn by royal infants, including all three of the Cambridge children, for the last 11 years.

Following their surprise decision to “step back” as senior members of the royal family, the Sussexes flew to Canada where they intend to spend a large majority of their time.

In light of the Queen’s statement on their departure, the couple will no longer be referred to as His or Her Royal Highness and will refund the money used to refurbish their royal residence, Frogmore Cottage, which is thought to have cost British taxpayers around £4.5 million.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s post-royal plans will come into effect in UK spring 2020.
