Sophie Delezio Is Getting Married To Her Childhood Best Friend

From year 10 formal dates to fiancés.

Sophie Delezio has announced she is engaged to her childhood best friend, Joseph Salerno.

In an interview with Australian Women’s Weekly, Delezio, now 22, shared the surprise way her fiancé had popped the question, on none other than Valentine’s Day.

“Oh my God, I had no idea,” Sophie said, adding:

“Funnily enough, I got a heart painted on one of my nails the week before and joked that it might give Joseph the hint! That’s how little I suspected what he had planned.”

The plan involved both sets of their parents decking out their apartment, while Joseph took an unsuspecting Sophie out for a drink.

When they returned, their flat was “all decked out with tea-light candles and rose petals.”

“It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever witnessed,” Sophie gushed.

Next, Joseph gave Sophie (who still “didn’t realise what was going on”) a hand-made scrapbook, with a photo of an engagement ring inside.

The real ring, Joseph shared, is “a real princess style,” because Sophie is a big Disney fan.

“In the end I chose a trinity ring with three stones representing the past, present and future,” he shared.

The pair also opened up about their first meeting, on the same swimming team at age six, and then properly years later, when Sophie moved to Joseph’s high school.

“He’d been away visiting family in Italy, but I’d heard all about him and I think you could say he lived up to my expectations, if not more,” Sophie said, adding:

“We were very close from then on and even went to our Year 10 formal together. It’s great because we already know so much about each other. Everything feels very natural.”

Sophie won the hearts of Australia in the midst of tragedy, when she was involved in two horrific car accidents.

The first occurred in 2003, when she was just two, and a car crashed into her Sydney child care centre, leaving her with burns to 85 per cent of her body.

Three years later, Sophie was hit by another car while crossing the road with a babysitter, throwing her almost 20 metres down the road.

As a result of the accidents, Sophie has had amputations to both legs below the knees, several fingers, and an ear.

But, despite her injuries, Sophie shared in the interview that, “I’m never going to wish they didn’t happen, because they brought me to where I am today.”

“I have no complaints. This is the life I know and love.”
