90s Rom-Com queen, Meg Ryan, is officially returning to the genre with a new film, What Happens Later.
The 61-year-old is known for her iconic roles in classic romantic comedies, including When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless In Seattle and You’ve Got Mail—but What Happens Later will be Ryan’s first film since 2015, and most notably, her first romantic comedy since 2001.
For those in the northern hemisphere, the new film will be dropping in fall—a season associated with the actress and those iconic movies.
So, what can we expect from Meg Ryan’s newest film? Everything you need to know, below.
What Is What Happens Later About?
What Happens Later is based on Steven Dietz’s 2010 play, Shooting Star.
The film sees Ryan and David Duchovny star as ex-lovers, Willa and Bill, who reunite for the first time in years, after finding themselves snowed in at the same airport.
With the building shut down overnight, the pair spend the night unpacking “the riddle of their mutual past and compare their lives to the dreams they once shared”, according to the film’s official synopsis.
The pair also “begin to wonder if their reunion is mere coincidence, or something more enchanted.”
Ryan has also likened the film to 1940s films like Bringing Up Baby. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress described the film like those of that era “in terms of the banter and the rhythm of things and a lot of that era of filmmaking.”
“Nora Ephron used to say about rom-coms that they were really a secretly incredible delivery system to comment on the times, and we do that in this movie.”
When Will What Happens Later Be Released?
What Happens Later is coming to cinemas on October 13, 2023.
